The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County seeks applications for a
Museum Archivist to manage the institutional archives and records of the
Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County family of museums. The Archives
Department is administratively part of the Research Library and provides
archives and records management services for, and acquires and provides access
to, archival records across all programs.
Reporting to the Chief Librarian, the successful candidate will have:
knowledge of both archives and records management practices; a combination of
traditional and digital archives experience; knowledge of digitization
practices for archival materials; familiarity with managing born digital
content; an ability to overhaul a static archive program to one that is
outward-looking and active; successful grant writing and fund raising
experience; records management training and experience; capability to ensure
that the Museum follows best practices and is in compliance with the relevant
standards set forth by the Society of American Archivists, the American
Library Association, the American Association of Museums, ARMA International
and others. This is a strategic position that requires the ability and
experience to work collaboratively with staff from all departments and all
levels of seniority towards integrating access to information assets across
the organization.
Requirements
Required education and experience:
Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) from a program accredited by
the American Library Association (ALA) with a focus on Archival Management and
Records Management or a Master of Arts in Public History with a focus on
Archival Management and Records Management with library experience.
Minimum 7 to 10 years of professional experience with archives or special
collections and records management in a cultural heritage or educational
setting.
Thorough knowledge of records management principles and practices, archival
standards and practices, and legal and ethical issues related to records and
archives management.
Minimum 3 to 5 years of project management and supervisory experience.
Thorough knowledge of ongoing developments in the archival profession,
particularly in born-digital resource management.
Technological competencies including the use of library and archive management
systems.
Strong communication, collaboration, and client service skills.
Ability to meet deadlines, apply policies and procedures consistently, and
present recommendations.
Academic experience in natural sciences or history (particularly California
history) a plus
