Certificate in XML and RDF-Based Systems
http://libraryjuiceacademy.com/certificate-xml-rdf.php
We've advertised our course series in XML and RDF-based systems previously,
but I'd like to share a few testimonials that show why I have so much
confidence in this program:
"I cannot thank you enough for this course. I’ve been asked to be the
division’s point person for the semantic web, linked data, and BIBFRAME,
and, up until this point, was entirely self-taught as I needed to work with
something. Thank you for an actual structured course!"
- Deborah DeGeorge (Introduction to the Semantic Web)
"The reason why I am taking this course is the graduate course I took
recently was horrible. So I decided I needed to find additional sources of
training and am glad I have taken it with Library Juice. Robert Chavez is
excellent and very helpful. He responds to questions quickly and
participates fully during our weekly chats. Frankly, he has participated
more than the professor at school did. I am glad I signed up for XSLT and
Xquery and Semantic Web course."
- Jeanne Booth (Introduction to XML)
"I’ve been trying to find a XML developers course that was lightweight but
at the same time offered an above average level of complex programming.
This course was a good introduction and gave me some skills that I can
further develop."
- Jeff Aucone (Introduction to XML)
"I am amazed by how much I have learned during the last six months in the
XML & RDF Systems Certificate Program, taught by Robert Chavez... Not being
a programmer, I was somewhat intimidated by some of the courses (XSLT and
SPARQL, specifically). However, Rob presents these topics in such a clear
and concise way that I found the majority of the instruction highly
digestible. Rob’s plethora of examples are also incredibly helpful. On the
occasions when I felt a bit lost or had a question, I found Rob quick to
respond with a thorough answer... I would (and have already) recommend this
class to anyone who wants to learn more about XML and RDF."
- Jess Waggoner (Series as a whole)
"All of the courses in this series have been excellent. The class on
Ontologies is no exception. Once again, Robert Chavez provides clear
introductory essays with links to complete documentation and selected
video-clip presentations. The homework assignments help the beginner to
focus on basic concepts. Dr. Chavez welcomes discussion of the topics, and
is very encouraging to students at all levels. One could not ask for a
better guide to this topic."
- Valerie Bross (Ontoloties and Linked Data)
In this 6-course certificate program, you will gain competency as a coder
in XML and RDF-based systems that create, transform, manage, and
disseminate content and metadata. Typically, these are the structures at
the heart of content management systems, repositories, and digital
libraries, as well as the upcoming BIBFRAME. Topics covered include XML
fundamentals, XPath, DTDs and Schemas, standard markup languages, XSLT and
Xquery, the semantic web, RDFa and RDFa Lite, RSS, ontologies and linked
data, and the SPARQL semantic query language and protocol.
Courses in this series:
- Introduction to XML
- Transforming and Querying XML with XSLT and Xquery
- Introduction to the Semantic Web
- RDFa1.1 (RDFa and RDFa Lite) and RSS
- Linked Data
- The SPARQL Fundamentals I - the Semantic Web in Action

We are offering an optional 7th and 8th class, The SPARQL Fundamentals II
and The SPARQL Fundamentals III.
These courses work best if taken in sequence, as the sequence builds on
knowledge gained, but we have no formal prerequisites in place. If you need
to take them out of sequence, feel free to contact us about your situation.
You can register for all six courses in the certificate program, at a 10%
discount ($945 for the six courses). The "Register" button on the web page
for the series will register you for the sequence of classes that starts in
February 2017. You can register for individual classes as well, at $175.
Robert Chavez holds a PhD in Classical Studies from Indiana University.
From 1994-1999 he worked in the Library Electronic Text Resource Service at
Indiana University Bloomington as an electronic text specialist. From
1999-2007 Robert worked at Tufts University at the Perseus Project and the
Digital Collections and Archives as a programmer, digital humanist, and
institutional repository program manager. He currently works for the New
England Journal of Medicine as Content Applications Architect.

These are online classes that are taught asynchronously, meaning that
participants do the work on their own time as their schedules allow. The
classes do not meet together at any particular times, although the
instructor may set up optional sychronous chat sessions. Instruction
includes readings and assignments in one-week segments. Class participation
is in an online forum environment.
You can register through the first week of instruction of the first class.
The "Register" button on the website goes to our credit card payment
gateway, which may be used with personal or institutional credit cards. (Be
sure to use the appropriate billing address). If your institution wants to
pay using a purchase order, please contact us by email to make
