Position: Serials Metadata Librarian
Location: University of Alberta Libraries
The University of Alberta Libraries seeks a dynamic professional to join
the Bibliographic Services Unit. Bringing strength in broad knowledge of
bibliographic metadata, the successful candidate will work within an
integrated, responsive team, responsible for the description of print and
electronic serials and the development of core capacities for metadata
manipulation. The successful candidate will provide leadership for both
serials cataloguing and metadata manipulation, ensuring the provision of
accurate and consistent metadata based on established, proprietary, and
emergent standards and platforms. The Serials Metadata Librarian
understands the evolving nature of bibliographic standards and practice and
will monitor, evaluate, recommend and apply current and emerging trends and
standards. In this context the position provides expertise and leadership
in policy development related to the provision of access to library
resources, and provides consultative services on policies, issues, formats
and standards related to serials and metadata manipulation. The Serials
Metadata Librarian will also be involved with training and mentoring staff
as well as supporting special projects to ensure accurate data linking and
metadata compatibility in the NEOS consortium catalogue and the Libraries’
discovery systems.

The Bibliographic Services Unit is responsible for the description of the
Libraries’ collections across all subject areas and formats. Bibliographic
Services is comprised of several teams, each responsible for the
description of resources as needed for use in the ILS, discovery systems
and institutional repositories. Key goals of Bibliographic Services are to
help identify and implement strategies that effectively support resource
description for enhanced discovery relevant to the teaching and research
needs of the University of Alberta community.
