POSITION: Metadata Librarian

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks an innovative, knowledgeable, and user-focused professional to serve in the position of Metadata Librarian.
Primary responsibility: The Metadata Librarian will work closely with developers and other stakeholders to design and implement metadata, crosswalks, standards/policies, workflows, and tools to support access to collections of digitized and born-digital materials in multiple digital collection management systems and to support long-term preservation of those materials deposited into the Carolina Digital Repository. Materials in our digital collections are in a variety of formats, including theses and dissertations, scholarly publications, research datasets, images, audio, and video. The Carolina Digital Repository provides ingest, access, and preservation services for born-digital library collections, University archives, and research data created by members of the UNC community. Other systems currently used to support digital collections include CONTENTdm, Omeka, and Sufia. This position will help evaluate such systems and play a role in planning and managing data migrations between systems.
· Trains select cataloging staff on non-MARC metadata skills to broaden the pool of staff who can contribute to Repository and digital collection metadata work; delegates projects to these staff; and manages this distributed team’s metadata work
· Maintains awareness of developments and best practices in non-MARC metadata for institutional repositories and digital collections, as well as bibliographic description (i.e. BIBFRAME, linked data), and is involved in strategic planning to prepare the Library for advancing in these areas
· Applies expertise in manipulation and transformation of metadata to assist with designing and updating workflows
· Serves as a resource for staff in all campus libraries, advising on appropriate strategies for creating and managing metadata
· Follows and participates in local, regional, and national discussions on metadata policy and practice
The Metadata Librarian reports to the head of the Library Data Strategy & Services section of the E‑Resources & Serials Management department, and works closely with the Repository Librarian and staff throughout the Resource Description & Management and Library & Information Technology departments.
· ALA-accredited master’s degree in library or information science, or a related advanced degree
· Experience using various metadata schemas, vocabularies, and content standards (such as DC, MODS, EAD, AACR2, RDA, LCSH, PREMIS, METS, etc.) and various encoding/transmission formats (such as RDF, XML, MARC, JSON, etc.)
· Demonstrated experience with any of the following tools (or others like them) to create, extract, transform, analyze, and/or quality control metadata: XSLT, spreadsheets, MarcEdit, OpenRefine, scripting languages, regular expressions, SQL, etc.
· Ability to work independently and in teams on multiple projects
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills and attention to detail
· Experience developing, maintaining, and documenting local metadata vocabularies, schemas (XML or other), application profiles, crosswalks, mappings, transformations (XSLT or other), and workflows
· Familiarity with linked data and RDF technologies, especially as applied in libraries
· Familiarity with data modeling concepts for digital objects and their relationships to each other
· Familiarity with traditional library bibliographic metadata (i.e. cataloging) tools, standards, and initiatives
· Understanding of issues in managing, describing, and providing access to electronic resources
· Experience designing workflows and/or managing projects
· Experience with systems/tools used for digital repositories and collections, such as: Fedora, DSpace, Sufia, CONTENTdm, Islandora, etc.
· Experience in an academic or research library setting

Salary and Benefits
This is a twelve-month academic librarian appointment. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Standard state benefits of annual leave, sick leave, and State or optional retirement plan.
