Assistant Professor / Discovery Services Librarian
The University of Dayton Libraries seeks an innovative, collaborative, and
service-oriented early-career professional to join the Information
Acquisition
& Organization Division as the Discovery Services Librarian. This is a full-
time (12-month) tenure-track faculty position reporting to the Director of
Information Acquisition & Organization.
Responsibilities:
This position will play an integral role in the development, implementation,
and evolution of strategies and services for the seamless discovery of
library
resources and the continuous improvement of the user experience. As part of
the discovery process, this role is responsible for managing aspects of the
life cycle of electronic resources, which can include cataloging/metadata,
access, discovery, assessment, and problem resolution. Since discovery is a
constantly evolving process, this person is also responsible for monitoring
trends and best practices in e-resources management, discoverability, and
use.
This position will work collaboratively to develop and assess efficient
workflows for the enhancement of library discovery services.
The Discovery Services Librarian will be assigned a limited number of
research
assistance duties in order to fully understand user needs. This position
will
also serve as a liaison to an academic department, providing collection
development and limited instructional support for that discipline. As a
tenure-track faculty member, the Discovery Services Librarian is expected to
engage in research and publication as defined by the University Libraries’
promotion and tenure policy.
Minimum Qualifications:
1. MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited program or its international equivalent
2. One year of cataloging coursework or equivalent combination of coursework
and experience
3. Coursework covering or experience with the life cycle of electronic
resources, including related trends and best practices
4. Articulated ability to work within a team environment where collaboration
and cooperation are essential
5. Effective written communication skills
6. Articulated potential to meet University Libraries’ promotion and tenure
requirements
While no one person is expected to have all of the following preferred
qualifications, the successful candidate will meet many of them:
1. Demonstrated experience cataloging serials or electronic resources using
RDA standards
2. Demonstrated experience with administrative functions of a library
discovery service (e.g., EBSCO, Summon)
3. Demonstrated experience providing research assistance to users
4. Demonstrated ability to work independently and to manage multiple
assignments
5. Demonstrated service orientation
6. Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations and promote
equality
and inclusiveness in support of the University’s commitment to diversity and
inclusion
7. Expressed willingness to engage with Catholic and Marianist educational
values
