Partnering up: libraries and vendors joining forces to improve technical services workflows

Libraries must constantly acclimate to the ever-changing needs of their patrons. Whether it be to improve existing services or create new ones, libraries will at times be required to work with outside organizations to accomplish these tasks. An important partner that can help in dealing with these needs are vendors. Vendors can help libraries in accomplishing the everyday responsibilities that provide successful outcomes for users. As with all partnerships there are difficulties that libraries and vendors deal with when partnering up. Our panel will share their experiences and discuss how best to accomplish a successful partnership where librarians and vendors joined forces to improve the workflows for technical services.

Wen-ying Lu-Head of Cataloging at Santa Clara University (SCU) Library. She manages a unit responsible for cataloging, database maintenance and firm-order acquisitions. Prior to SCU, Lu was the cataloging librarian at San Mateo County Libraries, continuing resources catalog librarian at the University of Colorado Boulder Libraries, and catalog librarian and linguistics bibliographer at Michigan State University Libraries.
Chew Chiat Naun-Graduate of Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, and recently joined Harvard Library as Head of Metadata Creation. In his previous position at Cornell University he was a member of a team that implemented FAST for routine minimal-level cataloguing. He is active in the Program for Cooperative Cataloging and co-chairs (with Ed Jones) the Standing Committee on Standards.
Charles Hillen-Director of Library Technical Services at GOBI Library Solutions in Contoocook, New Hampshire. Prior to his current position, he served as the Head of Acquisitions & Serials at Loyola Marymount University. He has also worked as the Head of Acquisitions at the Getty Research Institute, and at Old Dominion University as Lead Cataloger and as Supervisor of the Diehn Composers Room. He has presented on various topics in acquisitions and collection development and is an instructor for the ALCTS Fundamentals of Acquisitions course.
John Chapman-Senior Product Manager, Metadata Services for OCLC, where he oversees cataloging applications, including Connexion and WorldShare Record Manager, as well as the WorldCat Metadata API. Prior to working at OCLC, he was Metadata Librarian for the University of Minnesota. During his career in libraries, he has received honors and professional recognition for accomplishments in corporate librarianship, special collections digitization, and metadata standards development.
