Job Description
This is a term-limited, one year appointment. {The expectation is that funding will continue after year one.}
Background:
The mission of the Social Science Research Institute (SSRI) is to catalyze pioneering social science research and methods across the social and behavioral sciences. We serve scholars at all levels from across the Duke University campus and Duke Medicine.
Although many of our principal constituents find their disciplinary homes in the departments of Economics, Political Science, Psychology and Neuroscience, Public Policy, and Sociology, we have also welcomed faculty from other departments and schools within our facilities and programs and as collaborators.
The Protected Research Data Network (PRDN) is SSRI’s computational and storage enclave for Sensitive research data.
Occupational Summary: This position plays a key role in managing confidential data sets for the social science researchers of Duke.
Description of Work: Researcher Assistance (50%):
Assist researchers in obtaining and renewing access to research datasets.
Assist researchers with IRB submissions, amendments, and renewals.
Assist researchers in complying with data provider requirements.
Explain and demonstrate effective DUA applications, DMP and IRB documentation.
Write and modify DUAs and Data Management Plans (as required by external data providers).
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of current DUA requirements Operational (25%):
Maintain the SSRI inventory of existing project information and other restricted dataset usage. In conjunction with SSRI’s Associate Director of Research Data Security and the Senior Restricted Data Specialist, provide input to improve the system.
Document and teach proper safety etiquette when dealing with protected data. Direct users to existing resources on the web for training, and strongly encourage new researchers to undertake training.
Administrative and Compliance (25%)
Assist researchers with IRB and DUA compliance. In conjunction with SSRI’s Associate Director of Research Data Security and the Senior Restricted Data Specialist, determine and institute follow up mechanisms to ensure researchers are aware of and abiding by DUA terms; and instruct new researchers on adherence to the DUA terms.
Maintain familiarity with relevant federal, state, and University regulations and policies applicable to social science research and human subjects protection, and advise researchers as to their applicability to proposed or approved research protocols.
Ideal candidate will possess:
Bachelor’s degree in a social science, Information/library science, or business
Experience with writing and executing DUA and IRB documents in an academic setting
Professional editing and writing experience
Experience working with confidential datasets
Knowledge of data security issues
Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated abilities in collaboration and consensus building
Initiative, resourcefulness and the ability to self-direct, problem-solve, and follow processes to completion
Detail- and documentation-oriented
Education/Training Work requires a bachelor's degree in a field related to the specific position.
Experience: Work requires two years of experience in research/data analysis or related position.
A related master's degree may offset required years of experience on a 1:1 basis, e.g. a two-year master's degree in lieu two years of experience. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
