What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Library Professional I or Library Professional II level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate.  Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The LANL Research Library seeks a forward-looking information professional to proactively develop and manage library collections.  The Library delivers essential knowledge services in support of the Laboratory’s mission to solve national security challenges through scientific excellence.  We do this by hiring highly talented personnel who deliver outstanding service.

You will also work on the Library’s Reference & Research Support team, providing services to Laboratory scientists and engineers, as well as collaborating across project teams.  We seek a versatile individual eager to help shape the future of the LANL Research Library.

Core Responsibilities

  *   Collection management and development
  *   Scholarly communications services
  *   The initial core responsibility of this position is collection management and development. As the incumbent matures into his/her position, those responsibilities will expand to include outreach, reference and research support.


Library Professional I ($53,300 - $84,700)
The successful candidate will be required to:

  *   Develop the collection by helping to select content that aligns with the current needs and mission of the Laboratory
  *   Apply their knowledge to acquire and make accessible the journals, databases, books and other scholarly information resources needed by the research community
  *   Plan and monitor collection budgets, as well as perform collection analysis, e.g. cost/use
  *   Stay abreast of trends and changes in scholarly communications
  *   Promote and incorporate digital scholarship tools, such as ORCID or DMPTool, researcher profile systems
  *   Provide reference support and instruction at multiple service points (in-person, phone, email)
  *   Engage in outreach to the Laboratory community, both learning about their work and educating them about Research Library products and services


Library Professional II ($65,200 - $103,500)
In addition to the duties outlined above, the Library Professional II will be required to:

  *   Work collaboratively with appropriate stakeholders to  develop, implement and manage the full electronic resources lifecycle, from trials and renewals to negotiation, licensing and access
  *   Ensure effective stewardship of the collection budget, including monitoring acquisition budgets and fund assignments, ongoing assessment of budget allocations, and managing the process for end-of-fiscal-year purchasing
  *   Track regulatory (legislative/government) changes and evaluate impact on access
  *   Apply knowledge of current issues and trends in electronic licensing, access provision, copyright, and traditional collections
  *   Have knowledge of and apply publisher policies on archiving

  *   Work collaboratively to develop and implement next-generation reference and library outreach services
  *

What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:

  *   Demonstrated collection development and resource analysis skills
  *   Experience making electronic resources accessible
  *   Demonstrated collection budget management skills
  *   Familiarity with digital scholarship tools and trends
  *   Experience providing research, reference, instruction, and consultation assistance
  *   Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a rapidly changing team-based environment
  *   Excellent customer service and collaboration skills
  *   Strong written and verbal communications skills

  *   Ability to obtain a Q clearance

 Additional Job Requirements for Library Professional II:
In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the Library Professional II level requires:

  *   Demonstrated experience supporting the acquisition and/or maintenance of electronic resources in an academic or research library
  *   Demonstrated experience managing collection budgets
  *   Demonstrated experience applying knowledge of trends in digital scholarship and collections
  *   Demonstrated experience managing and negotiating license agreements
  *   Demonstrated experience troubleshooting problems with electronic resource access


Desired Skills

  *   Working knowledge of a range of scholarly communication services & activities such as open access, digital preservation, funding agency requirements, and copyright
  *   Past involvement in and development of outreach activities
  *   Experience with an integrated library system (ILS), preferably Alma
  *   Ability to formulate and implement innovative approaches and solutions to problems
  *   Experience and/or educational background in a STEM-related discipline
  *   Familiarity with DOE/NNSA Laboratories research and development mission areas

 Library Professional I Education Required:  Bachelor’s Degree, MLS / MLIS degree (ALA-accredited preferred), and a minimum two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Library Professional II Education Required:  Bachelor’s Degree, MLS / MLIS degree (ALA-accredited preferred), and a minimum five years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Additional Details:

Clearance:  Q (Position will be cleared to this level).  Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter.

*Eligibility requirements:  To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2<https://www.directives.doe.gov/directives-documents/400-series/0472.2-BOrder> for additional information.
