The UW Libraries has an outstanding opportunity for an Accessibility Coordinator. This position will be responsible for leading the Libraries’ efforts toward more usable and accessible systems and digital content. This position is currently funded for one year.
DUTIES:
•Work with teams in Libraries IT, Access Services, Collection Development, Acquisitions, and UW Accessible Technology Services, to evaluate existing workflows and electronic documents (e.g., PDF, Microsoft Word, and PowerPoint files), and systems/platforms.
•Evaluate new technology (equipment and software) and e-resources for acquisition and provide accessibility expertise.
•Deliver presentations on accessible technology, mobile technology, accessible web and application design, and related areas to Libraries units and others.
•Research, recommend and implement systems and processes to facilitate the captioning and transcription of audio, video, and other multimedia instructional content.
•Provide consulting in the development of accessible library websites, online content and applications.
•Supervision: Instruct, develop procedures for, supervise, and evaluate part-time student staff to support the responsibilities of this position to promote the development, procurement, deployment, and use of accessible websites, documents and other IT.
•Research assistive technology and stay abreast of new developments in the field.
•Understands and abides by the Libraries Personal Communication Responsibilities. Communicates appropriately, effectively and positively. Plays an active role in staying informed and participating in Libraries and unit meetings, activities and events. Other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS:
•Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Human Centered Design and Engineering, Information Systems or related field.
•Two to three years’ experience with digital accessibility and assistive technology.
•Knowledge and/or experience regarding implementation strategies and disability practices and procedures with regards to assistive technology devices.
•Demonstrates a strong understanding of universal design and ability to guide staff in meeting digital accessibility standards. Demonstrates knowledge of best practices for accessible documents, media, and other digital tools.
•Demonstrates an understanding of relevant legislation, regulations, and compliance guidelines/standards for higher education, including the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), WA State Policy #188, and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 (WCAG).
•Ability to communicate and build positive relationships with all stakeholders including faculty, staff, students, and vendors -- with varying levels of technical expertise.
•Demonstrated ability to identify and resolve problems independently as well as on a team.
•Excellent oral and written communication skills. Experience communicating and coordinating across multiple departments and organizations.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
DESIRED:
•Experience conducting and assessing training sessions and workshops and/or teaching experience.
•Experience consulting or negotiating with vendors or external development teams.
•Experience with user interface design or user experience testing.
•Experience working in an academic/library IT environment.
•Proficiency in working with HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript according to W3C standards.
