Located in Rochester, N.Y., the Eastman School of Music, Sibley Music Library maintains holdings of nearly three-quarters of a million items, and is recognized as one of the world’s preeminent research libraries devoted to all aspects of the study of music. Materials are assigned either to the circulating collections or to the Ruth T. Watanabe Special Collections, which includes rare books, archival collections, the Eastman School of Music Archives, and the Eastman Audio Archive. The Eastman School of Music invites candidates to apply for the position of Library Technology Analyst/Software Engineer.
POSITION SUMMARY STATEMENT
Provides leadership within Sibley Music Library on all applications of electronic and digital technology. Evaluates, develops, implements, and manages a wide variety of library-specific technological applications to benefit and support the work of both library staff and users of Sibley Music Library (SML), including: a broad variety of technological applications for the Library’s departments (Acquisitions and Serials, Cataloging, Conservation and Binding, Public Services, and Special Collections); an online catalog specifically geared to the unique needs of music bibliographic retrieval; the Library’s website; and mobile applications of publically accessible catalogs, finding aids, and databases. Together with SML department heads, serves in an advisory capacity to the Associate Dean and Head of Sibley Music Library. Serves in a liaison capacity to Eastman’s (ESM) Technology and Media Production Department (T&MP) (particularly in desktop computing and website development), and to the University of Rochester’s River Campus Libraries (RCL) Department of Library IT Services (particularly with respect to the library management system shared by the three UR campus libraries).
Reports to the Associate Dean and Head Librarian of Sibley Music Library; exercises considerable latitude in applying independent judgment and decision-making.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide library-specific technological expertise and guidance to each of SML’s departments, including but not limited to: Facilitating the use of external bibliographic entities such as OCLC; providing leadership to the ESM library community for SML’s cooperative work with RCL in implementing a new library management system for acquisitions, cataloging, circulation, and reserves; collaborating with RCL staff in the ongoing maintenance of that system; developing plans to facilitate the addition of electronic and digital products to SML’s holdings; providing enhanced website access to e-journals; assisting in implementing web-based guides that provide content for individual ESM courses, studios, concerts, productions, and projects; collaborating with T&MP staff in managing web-based archival recordings generated at ESM; collaborating with RCL staff in managing SML content in the University’s digital repository (urresearch.rochester.edu) and its successors.
Using open source software (such as projectblacklight.org), and working independently, develop an online catalog for SML that is designed specifically to respond to the needs of music performance and scholarship, taking into account the music-specific factors of generic titles and voluminous composers in known-item searching. As appropriate, collaborate with other academic libraries on a national and international level working on similar projects, and ESM contract staff conversant with specific computer languages.
Maintain liaison with relevant RCL staff, especially with regard to integrating the catalog with a library management system for UR libraries. Maintain liaison with relevant T&MP staff, work closely with SML department heads, and provide regular updates to all SML staff.
Provide ongoing assessment, maintenance, updating, and enhancement of the catalog in order to maintain an optimum search tool for users of SML’s rich collections.
Continuously evaluate and enhance the SML website, ensuring that the content is up-to-date and accessible. Collaborate with staff in Acquisitions and Serials, Public Services, and Special Collections to achieve optimal web-based content.
Evaluate web-based catalogs, databases, finding aids, and other electronic SML content to assess and promote their availability and ease of use on mobile devices. Continually assess, develop, and implement new mobile applications relevant to SML users.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required
Undergraduate degree in music and substantial education and experience in computer science (equivalent to a minor field). or Undergraduate degree in computer science and substantial education and experience in music (equivalent to a minor field)—including college/university coursework in music theory and history in addition to performance experience.
· 2–3 years’ work experience in an academic library or music environment.
· Experience with Windows operating system.
· Ability to prioritize multiple projects and work well under pressure.
· Ability to work effectively in collaboration with colleagues.
· Ability to communicate clearly in both written and oral forms.
Preferred
Experience in developing, testing, implementing, maintaining, and troubleshooting a variety of web applications and tools, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, and content management systems such as WordPress. Familiarity with server-side web development applications. Experience in music cataloging, including understanding of the MARC format and use of OCLC for cataloging. Experience with music notation software such as Finale or Sibelius.
