Organizational Role
Leads the library’s information technology team and ensures the information infrastructure is capable of meeting the community’s and staff‘s high standards. Oversees the provisioning and reliable operation of the library’s internal and hosted applications and services. Collaborates with the Municipality and Princeton Public Schools on technology-related projects and issues.
Responsibilities
Sits on the senior management team, reports to the Executive Director, and champions innovative, creative ways for library-focused and general technology to improve the lives and well-being of the 30,000 residents in a diverse, cosmopolitan community.
Plans, coordinates, directs, and designs all IT-related library activities, and leads IT’s operational, strategic, and project planning. Benchmarks, analyzes, reports on IT infrastructure and systems, and uses this and other quantitative data, supplemented with qualitative evidence, to propose modification or enhancements to existing systems that would benefit cardholders and staff members.
Provides outstanding customer service, overseeing end-user services with patience and empathy, including help desk and support services. Works collaboratively with staff and end-users to identify, recommend, develop, implement, and support cost-effective technology solutions. Maintains regular written and in-person communication relevant to IT activities with co-workers and key stakeholders.
Manages the deployment, monitoring, maintenance, development, upgrading, and support of all IT systems, including, servers and PCs, operating systems and applications, switches and firewall, and telecommunications equipment. Introduces and integrates internally and externally hosted applications into the existing technology infrastructure.
Maintains hardware and software for business systems, including the Library Management System (currently III’s Sierra), self-check system (currently bibliotheca), PC reservation system (currently TBS), and payment system (currently Comprise).
Prepares and maintains documentation, physical inventory of all equipment, and replacement plan for infrastructure and applications.
Communicates, negotiates, and builds trusting relationships with vendors, and vets alternative business solutions. Develops requests for proposal, and negotiates and administers vendor, outsourced, and consultant contracts and service agreements.
Achieves financial objectives by forecasting requirements, preparing an annual budget, scheduling expenditures, analyzing variances, and initiating corrective action. Develops business case and cost/benefit analysis for IT spending and initiatives.
Defines, develops, and implements all IT policies, procedures, and best practices, including those for architecture, security, disaster recovery, standards, purchasing, and service. Interprets and applies laws, rules, and regulations. Performs routine audits of existing systems and software.
Manages IT staffing including recruitment, supervision, scheduling, development, evaluation, and disciplinary actions. Strategically grows the department to meet evolving community and library staff needs.
Keeps current with the technology needs of library automation systems, web-based and mobile library services, and public library issues and practices by reading relevant professional literature and monitoring other information sources, and by participating in professional associations, attending workshops, webinars, conferences, meetings, seminars, and courses related to library-based information technology.
Works flexible hours, including some nights and weekends as necessary.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
Demonstrated excellence in managing projects and building and leading teams.
Thorough knowledge or background in hosted/cloud technologies.
Demonstrated understanding of VMware or similar virtualization software.
Four (4) years of experience with current Windows Server and Windows desktop operating systems, as well as Microsoft Office Professional and Internet applications.
Four (4) years of experience with macOS and Apple’s preceding operating systems.
Two (2) years of experience with Google Apps.
Two (2) years of experience with WordPress.
Strongly preferred:
Four (4) years of experience with mainstream Linux desktop and server distributions, including strong competence in command-line operations.
Four (4) years of experience with the latest iOS and Android operating systems.
Thorough knowledge of CISCO ASA Firewall, Network Switches, and Routing.
Demonstrated ability to support and maintain relational and non-relational databases, including working knowledge of SQL.
Demonstrated ability to develop or at least modify software in at least one language commonly used in open source library projects, particularly Python, Ruby, JavaScript, C, Java, and/or PHP.
Record of deploying free and open-source software when appropriate and, ideally, contributing to open source projects.
Three (3) years of direct management experience.
