Digital Collections and Metadata Librarian
The Science History Institute is recruiting for the full-time position of Digital Collections and Metadata Librarian. Reporting to the Chief Curator of Audiovisual and Digital Collections, the Digital Collections and Metadata Librarian will oversee the daily operations and workflows related to the Institute’s Digital Collections platform (built on Samvera), including curation, digital object file transfers, photography QA, and record creation. The Digital Collections and Metadata Librarian will collaborate with the Collections Photographer and the technical team to set and oversee metadata standards and workflows for collections across the Institute, training staff in the library, archives, museum and center for oral histories. The Digital Collections and Metadata Librarian will oversee the ingesting of diverse digital assets drawn from the library and museum, and will participate in user testing and larger digitization projects.
The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:
Master’s degree in Library and/or Information Science or equivalent.
Minimum three years of professional experience working with digital collections.
Minimum of one year of experience overseeing the daily operations of a digital repository or asset management system.
Experience working with open source digital library software (such as Samvera, Islandora, or Fedora Commons) and library applications developers preferred.
Demonstrated experience with non-MARC descriptive metadata schemas such as Dublin Core, MODS, CCO or PBCore.
Experience with preservation and rights metadata, particularly PREMIS, is preferred.
Experience with born-digital files is a plus.
Familiarity with national cataloguing standards (MARC and LC Authorities) and some knowledge of VIAF, FAST, or related Linked Data initiatives.
Ability to communicate technical information to non-specialists and diverse constituents across the institution, including museum, development, IT, and oral histories staff.
Understanding of copyright law, including public domain, RightsStatements.org, and creative commons licenses.
Experience fulfilling reference requests.
