One other aspect that occurred to me is that since I had essentially been a
procedural programmer, wrapping my head around the Map/Reduce paradigm took
a while. Specifically, it took me a while to understand how to use the M/R
paradigm for particular processing tasks. I suppose a key breakthrough for
me was realizing that the mapper process is essentially a filter -- it's
where you select the data that you either will simply output to disk, or
else send on to a reducer for summarizing.

So using MARC data as an example, the mapper would select, perhaps based on
certain criteria (e.g., books only, published before 1923), and output one
or more elements of interest (e.g., place of publication, etc.). These
would then be summarized by the reducer (X occurrences of Y). This means
that if you want to do any data normalization, it needs to happen in the
mapper process. When I was doing this processing at OCLC, only rarely, in
the most complicated of operations, would my code run beyond 30 or so lines
in the mapper (with maybe a third of those lines either importing libraries
or code comments), with the reducer being ridiculously small. But then I
was also relying on libraries of routines for standard operations like
parsing the records into an array, etc.
