General Purpose:  

The Head of Information Technology is a key member of the Center's senior team dedicated to transforming online access and research in British Art, working closely with other major collections of British Art and study centers in the field, particularly the Center's sister institution, the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art, London. The Yale Center for British Art holds the largest collection of British art outside the United Kingdom and collaborates internationally on research projects and innovative technical solutions to support them. The Center seeks to continue to be a leader in the provision of open access to images and the development of linked open data solutions to enable a more efficient and sustainable research environment. The Head of IT provides research computing support to the Center by keeping abreast of emerging technologies for the dissemination of collections data. In collaboration with other departments at the Center, the Head of IT supports and develops an information architecture that allows collection-based datasets to be efficiently shared with online users, and programmatically contributed to data aggregators and the Semantic Web. The Head of IT reports to the Deputy Director for Finance and Administration. The person who holds this position directly manages the YCBA Software Engineer, one as-yet-to-be-determined open position, and indirectly manages one desktop support specialist. This position manages technical services provided by Yale ITS. The staff of the following departments will be key internal contacts for the Head of IT: Collections Information and Access, Library and Archives, Public Relations, and Imagining Services. Duties include: Lead strategic planning and manage implementation of information technology and new media at the Yale Center for British Art. Develop policies, practices, systems, and procedures for information technology at the Center, in close alignment with Yale ITS. Direct the Center's use of Yale technology infrastructure including hardware, cloud services, and business applications like identity management, SharePoint, Workday, HRMS, etc. Provide vision and support for collections documentation systems and their integration and data management, including Gallery Systems TMS, COBOAT, NetX digital asset management, ArchiveSpace, Blacklight. Provide vision, conceptual planning, and implementation of the digital infrastructure for the Center's research agendas, including publication of its collections via its website, social media, machine process-able data exchange protocol (XML and OAI-PMH and ResourceSync) and linked open data access.

 

Required Education and Experience: 

Bachelor's Degree in a relevant technical field and six years of related technical experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Qualifications:

Demonstrated expertise providing technical IT services in a museum, research and/or academic environment.
Ability to embrace innovation and pro-active in seeking out and implementing new technology systems for Center needs.
Proven knowledge of, and hands-on experience with software development.
Demonstrated strong understanding of cultural heritage data and general technical design principles and ability to execute to those principles. Proven ability to clearly communicate complex technical solutions to non-technical stakeholders.
Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills. Proven strong organizational and planning skills with ability to work independently and as a member of a team. Proven superior interpersonal and collaborative skills.

Preferred Education and Experience:

Advanced degree in Computer Sci., Information Sci., or Computer Info Systems. Experience with data exchange systems/web services. Project management, ability to manage timelines and resource allocation. Broad knowledge of contemporary web development frameworks, information architecture. Experience with RDF triplestores and data ontologies, particularly the CIDOC Conceptual Reference Model.
