OSU Libraries &amp; Press is seeking applications for our new Library Technology Unit Manager position. This manager will supervise a motivated group of individuals interested in moving library services forward through the creation and support of an array of web applications.  If you have experience in project management, especially in the area of library technology, and in facilitating the development and maintenance of library web applications, please consider applying.  This is a full time (1.00 FTE), 12 month, fixed term professional faculty position in our Emerging and Technology Services Department.

Position Summary

This position has two primary areas of focus:
to manage software projects in an agile, iterative framework that adheres to software development best practices;
and to facilitate the development and maintenance of library Web applications by supervising analyst programmers and infrastructure staff.

This position provides project management and works with staff across the library to create web applications that delight staff, students, faculty, and the broader community, enabling them to discover and access library resources and services to aid in effective coursework and research. The Library Technology Unit Manager will ensure that web interfaces are accessible and inclusive.

The position will also facilitate a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with people of all backgrounds.

Position Duties

50% – Project Management:

Manages projects and the personnel needed to complete them.

Develops project management processes, including technical documentation. Ensures project processes, standards and best practices are being followed.

Works with product owners to strategically define projects, develop user stories, establish requirements and timelines, and maintain and prioritize backlogs. Includes representation of appropriate stakeholder groups in the project planning process.

Collaborates with staff in other departments and/or at other institutions when working on projects, especially community collaborations or open source projects.

Monitors and communicates progress on project goals, timelines, and adjustments needed to stay on target, including daily management of staff within the project scope.

Maintains an awareness of library software applications in order to identify potential issues with the interoperability of various vended and open source systems.

40% – Management/Supervision:

Supervises 6 classified staff (4 analyst programmers and 2 operating systems/network analysts). Prepares staff performance evaluations, writes position descriptions, and recommends salary adjustments. Hires and schedules staff to ensure adequate coverage of the unit, and facilitates regular meetings with individual staff and the entire unit. Contributes to fostering ongoing growth and professional development of employees, responds to grievances, and initiates corrective action as needed.

10% – Service/Professional Development:

Represents ETS department on OSU Libraries and Press committees. Represents OSU Libraries &amp; Press at OSU and library events, and professional conferences and in open source communities. Builds project management and supervisory skills through professional development opportunities and reading. Demonstrates collegiality by actively participating in the governance and decision-making undertaken by members of the Library Faculty Association.

Minimum/Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution or equivalent experience

Supervisory experience

Experience with project management in a complex organization. Ability to manage multiple parallel projects

Experience working on IT projects, including a knowledge of software development processes and methodologies

Ability to collaborate on multi-institutional or cross-departmental projects

Demonstrated commitment to and active engagement with learning and practicing principles of social justice and inclusion

Ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a Criminal History Check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in Youth Programs may have additional Criminal History Checks every 24 months. Offers of employment are contingent upon meeting all minimum qualifications including the Criminal History Check Requirement.

Preferred (Special) Qualifications

Project management training and/or certifications

Basic understanding of web programming languages, e.g., HTML, CSS, PHP, JavaScript

Evidence of participation in open source software and associated communities

Experience working in a professional capacity in a higher education and/or library IT environment
