William Paterson University invites applications for a twelve month tenure-track position as Cataloging and Metadata Librarian at the rank of Librarian III.

Under the supervision of the Head of Cataloging and Bibliographic Services, the Cataloging and Metadata Librarian ensures access to the Library’s various collections by performing work related to cataloging and metadata, establishing best practices, standards, and metadata creation procedures, creating original cataloging of print and digital materials in a variety of formats.

Department Overview:

The David and Lorraine Cheng Library is a major center of activity within William Paterson University, admired for its high standards of customer service and commitment to student success. The Cataloging Department provides and maintains intellectual access to the Library’s print and electronic collections.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Responsible for original and complex copy cataloging of materials in a variety of formats, using MARC, RDA, AACR2, LCCS/LCSH, OCLC and the Library’s integrated library system; resolves discrepancies; maintains database integrity
Develops policies, best practices, and procedures, especially in the area of emerging formats, including metadata standards
Collaborates with Library Information Systems group, creating reports and workflows in support of Division goals
Commits to training as participant and trainer; self-development and staff development
Provides intra-departmental project leadership on projects related to bibliographic control and metadata issues
Participates in the Library’s User Education program
Provides general Reference Desk coverage, including on weekdays and weekends
Participates in the Library’s Liaison program by serving as a selector to assigned departments and taking part in collection development activities
Serves on Library, University, regional and national committees as appropriate

Qualifications:

ALA-accredited MLS, or equivalent (by time of appointment)
A second graduate degree is required for tenure
Advanced course work or experience in cataloging
Familiarity with established and emerging metadata standards
Demonstrated commitment to service and professional development

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience cataloging digital and non-print materials in an ILS
Second master’s degree

Track record of exhibiting emotional intelligence
Demonstrated ability to be flexible and collegial
Capacity to objectively listen to, understand and interpret what others are saying.
Capable of presenting position, opinion, and feeling in written or oral form in a way others will listen, understand, and be influenced
Evidence of being able to work independently and self-direct toward agreed upon goals and deadlines
