Head, Library Information Technology - Georgetown University Main Campus
The Head, Library Information Technology is responsible for the management of the Library Information Technology Department, including the overall planning, management, coordination, and operation support for the library's information technology infrastructure and services. S/he Initiates, develops, and facilitates the implementation and maintenance of library technology solutions and tools in support of the Library and the University's current and emerging needs. The incumbent oversees and manages the staff, technology, and applications support for Library IT systems and services. Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Digital Services and Technology and providing direct supervision for 7 FTEs and indirect supervision for 2 FTEs, the Head of Library Information Technology's core duties include:
Administration and Management
Manages the departmental operations and budgets; plans and guides major purchases of hardware and software.
Establishes policies, procedures and goals for the Department.
Plans, coordinates and facilitates departmental activities and Library IT projects.
Administers the Department's personnel agenda, providing leadership and guidance in staff training and development and supervises directly or indirectly department personnel.
Oversees all aspects of library information technology as deployed or planned at the Library, including digital repository, digital preservation, content management systems, Integrated Library System and discovery services, web services, application development and computer security and support.
Technology Infrastructure and Applications
Works closely with the campus University Information Services, CNDLS and other campus units and with WRLC and other relevant consortia to coordinate Library projects and services with campus wide systems and goals.
Oversees the development of new infrastructure to increase the Library's capacity to manage and support technology-intensive projects and services.
Ensures delivery service in the most cost-effective manner possible by reducing redundancy of infrastructure and leveraging shared services when possible.
Maintains awareness of and implements new technologies and appropriate tools to continuously improve library operations and services and to support the Library's research, teaching and learning agendas.
Digital Initiatives and Services
Leads the evaluation and implementation of new digital services that support current and emerging needs.
Collaborates with library, campus and external partners to enhance production, access to and use of digital collections.
Coordinates with other library departments and campus units in support of digital scholarship projects and services.
Provides guidance on technology-rich learning and collaborative spaces in support of research and scholarship.
Professional Contributions and Development
Maintains awareness and involvement in trends, initiatives and projects at the national, regional and local levels through participation in professional development activities.
Serves on library and university committees; actively participates in meetings at all levels of the institution.
Regularly contributes to the profession through writing for publication or active involvement in professional associations at the national or regional level.
Continually acquires new knowledge and updates skills to enhance professional performance in all areas of responsibility.
Performs other responsibilities as needed/required.
Qualifications
Masters Degree in Library Science, Computer Science, Management Information Systems or a related field
Five years post-masters experience in an academic library
Three years or more of supervisory experience
Demonstrated knowledge and experience with integrated library systems, computer hardware and software, network operating systems, and other discovery systems
Knowledge of Information Standards and Protocols such as Dublin Core, MARC, Z39.50, OAI/PMH and the OpenURL Framework
Experience in a variety of web scripting languages and standards (e.g. JavaScript, AJAX, XML, XSLT, CSS)
Knowledge of user authentication/authorization protocols, including CAS, Shibboleth, and LDAP
Superior oral and written communication including the ability to communicate technical information clearly and effectively
Demonstrated ability to lead in a rapidly-changing environment, and to work in collaborative environments
