The Wayne State University Library System (WSULS) seeks an innovative, service-oriented early career librarian to join our team as Librarian-in-Residence. The Librarian-in-Residence will help us serve the University's mission to create and advance knowledge, prepare a diverse student body to thrive, and positively impact local and global communities. The University mission embodies 150 years of educational excellence and access. Its students, staff, and faculty are driven to transcend historical and divisive inequities in our society. The University's mission of access and proud culture of diversity requires a Librarian-in-Residence who embraces an environment of inclusion that extends beyond simple tolerance by leveraging the power of peoples' individual identities and various perspectives. WSULS aims to achieve its vision by focusing on four foundational pillars: student success and retention, digital publishing and scholarship, community engagement, and culture and people.

The three-year residence program will provide relevant professional experience and positive mentorship to prepare a path for success in academic librarianship. The position aims to match the service and operational goals of WSULS with the professional interests of the Librarian-in-Residence. The program will provide well-structured opportunities to experience multiple areas of academic librarianship and will ensure enriching experiences overseen by mentors, program facilitators, and library leaders. As members of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Diversity Alliance, we are committed to "increasing the hiring pipeline of qualified and talented individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups." The Librarian-in-Residence at WSULS will join a cohort of residents/fellows from over 50 other ACRL Diversity Alliance member institutions.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

By the conclusion of the three-year program, under the supervision of the WSULS Associate Dean, the Librarian-in-Residence will have:

Participated in providing services that support the information and research needs of students, faculty, and other patrons at an academic institution
Delivered services, resources, and outreach activities that advance WSULS' mission
Explored various roles in an academic library to see how different functional units interact and contribute to the library as a whole
Cultivated the collaboration and communication skills necessary to work effectively in an academic library
Gained practical work experience and professional development opportunities
Contributed to shaping the field of librarianship through research and scholarship, and possess the communication skills and perspective to contribute to discussions about professional practice
Gained demonstrable knowledge related to ongoing relationships with users and be able to articulate appropriate strategies to support education and research
Demonstrated project and time management skills necessary to successfully manage complex projects
Received specific professional development and training focused on beginning their professional career
Gained the requisite experience and skills to compete for a position in an academic library

Qualifications

Master's degree in Library &amp; Information Science from an ALA-accredited program; if degree is in progress at the time of application, must be completed by June 2020.
Strong commitment to teaching and public service
Demonstrated ability to build and sustain working relationships across roles, disciplines, and units
Ability to communicate and interact effectively with faculty, staff, and students in a culturally diverse and rapidly changing environment
Evident skills to analyze, organize, and present information
Demonstrated aptitude to manage multiple priorities and tasks
Capacity to work independently and as a team member
Familiarity with current trends in library technology plus the ability to apply this knowledge in a work environment


POSITION START DATE WILL BE SUMMER 2020

BENEFITS
In addition to salary, the position provides 22 days of vacation and 22 days of sick leave per year, plus paid holidays. Wayne State's human resources benefits package includes health coverage options, retirement savings plans, tuition assistance, wellness rewards programs, and more. WSULS provides $1250 annually in professional development funds for this position. The Librarian-in-Residence will be represented by the American Association of University Professors and the American Federation of Teachers (AAUP-AFT) Local 6075.
