Brookens Library at the University of Illinois Springfield seeks dynamic and highly motivated candidates for the position of Program Director of Library Systems. The successful candidate will provide leadership and expertise in the selection, development, and implementation of library technologies, infrastructure, and digital services for library staff and users. Directs the Library Systems staff to develop, implement, and manage sustainable operations and strategic initiatives collaboratively. Provides statistical, usage and narrative reports as required and participates in library-wide policy and strategic planning decisions as a member of the Library Leadership Team.

Brookens Library supports teaching, learning and community at the University of Illinois Springfield. We offer a collaborative, fast-paced work environment that is focused on providing innovative services and resources to our students, faculty, and staff. Campus: Located in the state capital, the University of Illinois Springfield is one of three campuses of the University of Illinois system. The UIS campus serves approximately 5,000 students in 20 graduate and 31 undergraduate programs. The academic curriculum of the campus emphasizes a strong liberal arts core, an array of professional programs, extensive opportunities in experiential education, and a broad engagement in public affairs issues of the day. The campus offers small classes, substantial student-faculty interaction, and a rapidly evolving technology enhanced learning environment. Its diverse student body includes traditional, non-traditional, and international students. Thirty percent of majors are in undergraduate and graduate online degree programs and the campus has received several national awards for its implementation of online learning. Duties:

*       Provide leadership, vision, and direction for the Library Systems unit; lead the work of collaborating staff, coordinate library-wide work and programming, and facilitate organizational contributions of the program with visible leadership that promotes a culture of performance and growth; initiate and lead the planning, implementation, and assessment of program services, policies, and activities in alignment with library strategic directions.


*       Hire, train, lead, and mentor staff to carry out duties at the expected high level of performance, and regularly assess staffing performance effectiveness with clearly articulated performance expectations and regular, timely feedback in alignment with organizational processes and standards.  Develop, implement, and assess short- and long-term strategies for conducting unit services and key project activities; manage and regularly evaluate assignment of work and responsibilities for effective accomplishment of unit objectives; and manage an inclusive and equitable work environment for operations.  Consistently demonstrate accurate, timely, informed, bi-lateral communications relevant to unit, organizational, and institutional issues, and manage unit awareness of organizational communications, including unit requirements and goals resulting from organizational strategy.


*       Work with Library administration, unit heads, and staff to evaluate, prioritize, and manage technology applications, infrastructure, integrated library system (Alma), library websites, digital labs, and other digital projects or initiatives, including the alignment of technology resources, collections and access systems, and digital library infrastructure. Actively collaborates with Library staff to evaluate, explore, and implement new technology platforms and services to meet the needs of the UIS community and the Library's mission.


*       Act as a liaison and point of contact on behalf of the library with ITS, campus centers, and other key partners for issues related to information technologies. Collaborates with relevant library staff and campus partners on service models, partnerships, digital labs, digital projects, and other technology-related opportunities that support the UIS community and mission. Collaborate and manage relationships with campus-wide technology services, campus centers, consortium partners, and external vendors to ensure proper implementation and management of hardware infrastructures, security policies, and authentication/authorization procedures in the library.


*       Maintain an active knowledge of library, technology, and higher education trends and contributes to the profession through participation in professional organizations and conferences at the local, state, regional or national level and through service on library and campus-level committees.

Qualifications:

  *   Master's in Library Science or Information Sciences from an ALA accredited institution or Master's degree in computer science or equivalent advanced degree.
  *   Three or more years of relevant information technology experience in information technology in a library.
  *   Preferred: Experience with supervising full-time staff. Ability to work independently and to achieve outcomes in a collaborative environment. Strong customer service orientation with excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated project management skills. Working knowledge of authentication technologies such as Shibboleth, EZproxy, and/or OpenAthens. A working understanding of coding and scripting such as HTML5, CSS, Perl, Python, and SQL.
