What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Library Professional 1 or Library Professional 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Research Library at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) seeks an innovative Data Management Librarian. The Research Library delivers essential knowledge services in support of the Laboratory’s mission to solve national security challenges through scientific excellence.

The Data Management Librarian provides leadership on data services and collaborates heavily across library project teams as well as directly with Laboratory scientists and engineers on data management standards and practices. Reporting to the Research Services and Resource Discovery Section, this person provides key public services of consultations and instruction, while collaborating with developers and technical services library staff to ensure data management technologies meet the needs and challenges of managing data, including Big Data, from different scientific disciplines. We seek a highly collaborative and intellectually curious individual eager to help shape the future of data services at LANL.

Library Professional 1 ($56,600 - $89,900)

At this level, the Data Management Librarian will:

Partner across LANL teams, groups, and divisions to establish and deliver scalable repository data curation services in support of data sharing, reuse, collection development, and stewardship.
Provide data management services to members of the LANL community, including individual research consultations; group instruction on current tools, standards, and practices; and the development and documentation of workflows and procedures.
Form and maintain strong, productive relationships with stakeholders across the research data management landscape, both internal and external to LANL, in order to accomplish complex strategic and operational objectives.
Continuously explore emerging areas of data science and research data services.
Lead program-related projects, working groups, and teams.
Understand and proactively represent the data management needs of the LANL community to inform the development, provisioning, and enhancement of Research Library data services.
Provide general reference and research consultation and instruction.

Library Professional 2 ($69,300 - $110,000)

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the Data Management Librarian will:

Provide advanced assistance and guidance for more complex data management and research questions.
Manage projects varying in size and complexity.
Maintain active engagement in professional activities at a regional, national and/or international level.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Knowledge of the following:
Data services needs across the research lifecycle and data best practices, such as the FAIR principles.
General and discipline-specific metadata standards and schemas, such as DCMI and CSDGM.
Data repositories and public data sets.
Data management plan requirements for U.S. government agencies and leading science funding organizations.
Languages and tools such as Tableau, R, Python, or OpenRefine.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to provide reference and research services, instruction, and outreach
Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team with researchers, staff and a growing culturally diverse laboratory community.
Experience providing consultation to a range of audiences, including scientists, computer engineers, and information technologists.
Ability to obtain a Q clearance.

Additional Job Requirements for Library Professional 2:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

Experience working with data repositories and public data sets.
Experience utilizing text mining and/or visualization practices.
Experience providing guidance on data management plans and the requirements for U.S. government agencies and leading science funding organizations.
Ability to manage projects with a diverse group of stakeholders.
Experience with languages, such as R, Python, and tools, such as OpenRefine, Jupyter or other electronic laboratory notebooks, and APIs.
Ability to obtain a Q clearance.
Along with your resume, you must include a detailed cover letter explaining how you meet each of the minimum requirements and any of the desired qualifications.

Desired Qualifications:

Development and assessment of data models.
STEM degree or experience working in a research intensive environment.
Demonstrated experience with APIs.
Knowledge of emerging data management technological advances and trends, such as utilization of Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Knowledge of data analysis and/or visualization practices.

Education/Experience Library Professional 1 : Bachelor’s Degree, MLS / MLIS degree (ALA-accredited preferred) and a minimum two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Education/Experience Library Professional 2: Bachelor’s Degree, MLS / MLIS degree (ALA-accredited preferred), and a minimum five years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum two years’ experience as a science, engineering, or research data services librarian in a research library.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements

for access to classified matter.
Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served at least one year of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the one year of continuous service, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader.Please refer to Laboratory Policy P701 for applicant eligibility requirements.
