FUNCTIONAL TITLE: Front End UI/UX Developer
SUPERVISOR: Assistant Dean, Digital & Research Strategies

POSITION SUMMARY:
The River Campus Libraries (RCL) seeks a creative and collaborative UI/UX Designer to join the Digital & Research Strategies portfolio. The incumbent will lead front-end development of the library’s web presence and web apps, as well as contribute design, development, and prototyping expertise to online exhibits, research applications, AR/VR projects, wayfinding, and digital signage. Reporting to the Assistant Dean, Digital & Research Strategies, the successful candidate will leverage deep knowledge of Drupal development with a focus on theming, alongside skills in user experience design, to create transformative and engaging digital tools, services, and experiences.
AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:
Front-End Development 40%
· Develop and implement mobile-first, performant, user-centered web experiences in Drupal
· Apply best practices in responsive design, usability, and accessibility
· Continuously improve user interfaces and interactive experiences for library websites and digital projects
· Implement modern SASS/CSS to ensure cross-device and cross-browser compatibility
· Participate in the design of software platform architecture and databases
· Leverage reporting and analytics to improve design and user experience
UI/UX Design 35%
· Develop UI mockups and prototypes to communicate design ideas to stakeholders and support project planning
· Maintain knowledge of current and emerging UI design concepts, standards, and best practices
· Illustrate design ideas by leveraging wireframes, storyboards, user flows, process flows, and site maps
· Design graphic user interface elements like menus, controls, and other visual elements in alignment with University standards and guidelines
· Champion user-centered interaction models
· Collaborate on user research and user testing for RCL’s web presences and web apps
Professional Development 15%
· Remain current on changes and developments within the Drupal content management system
· Explore new trends in user experience, interface design, programming and development
· Prototype new tools and run pilot projects to test new technologies
· Participate in professional networks and organizations to expand knowledge base and share our work with a broader community
Miscellaneous Duties: 10%
· Maintain currency with library functions, resources, practices and procedures
· Participate in and contribute towards River Campus Libraries and University committees, meetings, and events
· Maintain professional collaborations with River Campus Libraries colleagues and university constituencies
· Perform other duties as assigned
REQUIREMENTS
Required:
· Bachelor’s degree plus 1+ years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience
· Portfolio highlighting multiple projects and your direct contributions
· Experience applying user-centered philosophies and/or interaction design best practices
· Experience with Drupal theming and Twig
· Knowledge of HTML5, SASS/CSS, JavaScript, PHP, with strong understanding of DOM
· Familiarity with debugging tools (Firebug, Chrome inspector)
· Working knowledge of version control software (GIT)
· Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
· Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and engage with stakeholders
· Ability to work independently and in a team environment with a high degree of accountability
· Demonstrated commitment to the values of diversity, equity and inclusion
· Familiarity with WCAG 2.0 and 508 Accessibility guidelines
Preferred:
· Background in user interface design, user experience, and/or computer science
· Experience with theming in both Drupal 7 and 8, including creating subthemes
· Experience with design software (Sketch, Invision, Adobe Creative Cloud)
· Knowledge of modern front-end frameworks (React, Angular, Vue, Foundation)
· Familiarity with other major CMS and MVC frameworks (WordPress, Omeka, Django)
· Familiarity with multiple development stacks (LAMP, MERN)
· Experience with project/ticket management software (JIRA)
· Comfortable working in a Unix environment
· Familiarity with game engines (Unity, Unreal)
· Experience designing for native mobile applications
· Familiarity with package management tools (Yarn, NPM)
