Position Description

 

The Research Library is offering a paid summer internship for graduate level library or information science students. We offer a full array of desktop and customized library services to staff members at the Board and assist in data intensive and web-dependent Board Research. 

The Research Library intern will help improve library services to the Board research and professional community. The intern will work on several of the following projects that represent a variety of the library's responsibilities.

DataFinder and Sierra Catalog Record Enrichment (RL Data and Infrastructure Teams)
Assist with the curation and cataloging of data sets using international and local standards and practices, potentially including stakeholder interviews. Enrich data set records using subject analysis, normalization of inconsistent metadata, and researching/populating content for new metadata fields. Link research with data assets used in research, to display in data inventory. In the Sierra catalog, apply taxonomy terms to catalog records.
Scholarly Research and Communications (RL Research and Infrastructure Teams)
Complete work on metadata schema implementation in our research repository. Examine the utility of altmetrics and possibly implement in our repository and author citation reports. Enhance and maintain metadata for DOIs through Crossref.
Taxonomy Standardization and Enhancement (RL Taxonomy/Metadata Team)                          Review scope notes to standardize formats; employ taxonomy and authority control to support interoperability; process and analyze DataFinder and Sierra search logs for controlled subject vocabulary term enrichment.
Research (All Teams and Chief Librarian)
Research and report out on several topics that support our library’s strategic plan (precise topics TBD, will likely relate to issues in scholarly communications, research data, and broader library issues).
Marketing (All Teams and Chief Librarian)                                                                                               Assist Marketing Team with creating and implementing new library marketing plan.
Improvements to Technologies and Processes Related to Library’s Strategic Plan
(RL Infrastructure and Research Team)                                                                                             Examples of work include: aid in roll out of new library website and discovery layer; development of improved Bank and Broker Newsletter functionality; work with Infrastructure Team to transition existing documentation away from a Microsoft Word and file-based system to a more streamlined and searchable web tool/platform.
Supporting the Library Move (RL Research and Infrastructure Teams)
Depending on when the pandemic crisis is over and we are back in the office, we may have work related to the library’s move to a new building. If this work is still necessary, the intern will perform collection management tasks supporting a library move: deaccessioning materials within a set of guidelines, offering and shipping materials to other Federal libraries, discarding withdrawn materials, measuring and tracking what is removed, and updating records and documentation for material disposition. If we are in the process of moving, the intern will help with tasks related to transfer of materials to the new space: shifting the collection to reduce large shelving gaps, shelving items, displays, signage, etc. If we have already moved to the new location, the intern will perform a comprehensive shelf reading to ensure collection is in order.

The internship will last 10-12 weeks and will either be conducted virtually, or in-person in Washington, D.C.

 

Position Requirements

 

Enrolled in a Master’s degree program in library or information science at an ALA-accredited institution
Knowledge and interest in library technology
A minimum of 15-20 credits in foundational library science coursework
Attention to detail, initiative, and good communication skills a must
