Job Summary
The University of Michigan Library is seeking a skilled developer to help create and maintain large scale digital library systems. The successful candidate will work as part of a team of programmers, librarians, and designers on major initiatives. This position will be, for the foreseeable future, primarily focused on software development for HathiTrust.

HathiTrust is a global partnership of 170+ academic and research libraries based at the University of Michigan working to ensure that the cultural record is preserved and accessible long into the future. More than ten years after its founding, HathiTrust holds one of the largest set of digitized books managed by a non-profit organization, offering an unprecedented opportunity to steward the cultural record through increasingly connected work that develops capacity and sparks innovation.

Organizationally, this position resides in the University of Michigan Library Information Technology division, and reports to the Head of Digital Library Applications. The development effort for HathiTrust is highly collaborative, with priorities and implementation activities led by the HathiTrust Enterprise Architect. HathiTrust anticipates significant investments in the next three to five years to update, redevelop, or replace many of the applications, APIs, and systems comprising the HathiTrust Digital Library, and the core systems and processes of managing the repository. The person in this position will participate directly in these activities, as well as ongoing operation and maintenance.

Responsibilities*

­Participate in the analysis of business and user needs, and the design of solutions involving computer systems and software.
­Develop, debug, modify and maintain complex software systems, including the full stack of components behind data driven web applications and APIs.
­Configure and customize open source software and engage in collaborative development activity ­using modern tools and techniques.                                                  
­Review system and software designs and prepare and conduct functional tests.
Create and maintain internal documentation.
Work independently, as well as collaboratively with teams.
Continue learning.

Required Qualifications*

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field and three or more years experience, or an equivalent amount of experience and education.
Demonstrated programming skills in a modern programming language.
Experience developing highly interactive, database-driven, user-focused web applications.
Demonstrated group work experience.
Intellectual curiosity and desire to discuss why we develop what we develop.
Willingness to learn.
Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
Excellent communication skills.
Understands and values diversity and the importance of inclusion as demonstrated through a commitment to apply and incorporate the differences, complexities, and opportunities that diversity brings to an organization.
Ability to perform the work remotely on a regular or temporary basis including maintaining work relationships, overall communication, meetings, training, professional development, etc.

Desired Qualifications*

Experience with technologies for indexing and searching such as Solr and/or ElasticSearch.
Experience working in a command-line based environment.
Familiarity with developing inclusive software, such as accessibility (WCAG 2.0) and internationalization best practices.
Experience with version control systems such as Git.
Experience with test-driven development.
Experience with management of code dependencies, including dependency tracking and bundling.

Final salary will be determined by experience and qualifications.

This position receives 24 days of vacation a year, and 15 days of sick leave a year with provisions for extended benefits, choice of health insurance programs, as well as opportunities for professional development and travel (subject to restrictions in place due to the pandemic). Working remotely is an option beyond it currently being required due to COVID-19.
