STEM Librarian

Department Summary

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library at San José State University (San Jose, CA) seeks a curious, innovative, and student-centered individual for the full-time, tenure-track position of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Librarian. This position is one of three that will be hired in 2021--STEM Librarian, iSchool Librarian, and Scholarly Communications & Digital Scholarship Librarian--providing a supportive cohort to the successful candidate. The Library is striving to increase the diversity of its faculty and encourages all members of underrepresented groups to apply.

Collaborating with a team of liaison librarians (including other STEM liaison librarians) and under the general guidance of the Faculty Director for Library Instruction and Assessment, the STEM Librarian will develop, deliver, and assess library instruction to STEM students; collaborate with STEM teaching faculty to determine collection needs and to implement information literacy initiatives; and enhance the library’s capacity to support the curricular and research needs of the university’s STEM departments, programs, faculty, staff, and students. As a faculty member, the librarian engages in library and university governance and scholarship, which includes research, scholarship, and creative activities required for tenure and promotion. This position is open to both entry level and senior level candidates, hiring at the rank of Senior Assistant Librarian.

Required Qualifications

ALA-accredited Master’s degree or its equivalent by the time of hire
Coursework and/or experience with library resources relevant to the research, teaching, and learning of science, technology, engineering, or mathematics
Coursework and/or experience in delivering information literacy instruction
Evidence of potential to maintain an ongoing agenda of scholarly research and professional development at appropriate levels
Demonstrated awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population, as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching and other comparable experience
Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated ability to plan, design, implement, and assess STEM-specific library services for diverse populations
Undergraduate or graduate degree or equivalent training/work experience in STEM
Demonstrated currency or involvement in librarianship, particularly within the STEM fields
Experience with designing, promoting, and integrating library services and resources to support the research lifecycle in STEM disciplines (e.g., data management)

Responsibilities

Initiating and fostering congenial and collaborative working relationships with students, teaching faculty and researchers in the assigned disciplinary areas to ensure ongoing dialogue about the evolving learning and research needs of the university’s STEM community
Supporting the research needs of faculty, researchers, graduate, and undergraduate students in STEM disciplines and collaborating with other STEM liaison librarians to improve library services to these areas
Support student learning across the various STEM disciplines by working with faculty to facilitate the effective use of curriculum-specific information resources and to embed information literacy into instruction
Engage in the selection and evaluation of resources that support the curricular and research needs of STEM students, faculty, and programs
Offer reference, consultative, and instructional services to undergraduate, graduate, and teaching faculty, and faculty researchers in the STEM disciplines in a variety of formats
Develop and share knowledge of scholarly communications related to the assigned disciplinary areas
Maintain familiarity with current and emerging approaches to scientific education and develop and maintain pedagogically appropriate instructional materials to support STEM student success
Assist with the development and implementation of assessment initiatives aimed at improving student learning, services, and collections in the STEM disciplines
Stay current and actively involved with developments in the library profession and particularly within the STEM disciplines
Participate in multidisciplinary teams, library governance, professional development activities, and university service
Build a record of progressive scholarly and professional achievement to fulfill the University requirement of retention, tenure, and promotion
Participate in shared governance, including department, college, university, and other committee service assignments
Demonstrate awareness and experience understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, cultural background, ethnicity, primary language and academic preparation – through inclusive course materials and teaching strategies
