The Internet Archive (IA) is a non-profit digital library, top 200 website at archive.org, and an archive of over 60PB of digital information running in multiple self-owned data centers. The Internet Archive also partners with organizations to advance the shared goal of “Universal Access to All Knowledge.” The Web Archiving & Data Services group provides a suite of paid and free products focused on the archiving, management, analysis, and accessibility of digital information -- especially from the web. Its web archiving, digital preservation, and web and data services are used by over 800 libraries, universities, governments, non-profits, social impact, technology, and open knowledge organizations around the world.

The Web Archiving & Data Services group is seeking a Web Archivist to deliver world-class support to the users of our products and services, including our Archive-It web archiving service and our other services for preserving and accessing born-digital archives. The Web Archivist will act as the main contact for our users, supporting the work of hundreds of cultural heritage, higher education, and mission-driven organizations, understanding their preservation and access needs, and aggregating data-driven insights to improve our suite of services and develop new products and programs for the library community. The role is responsible for managing technical questions and working closely with a fully remote team of engineers, product, program staff, and fellow archivists. The role also focuses on internal projects, contributing to feature development and testing, help documentation and videos, collection building and stewardship, metadata, training and education, and representing the Web Archiving & Data Services team and the Internet Archive in the professional community.

Key Responsibilities:


Work to resolve technical support issues, assisting partners in troubleshooting issues and maintaining the quality of archived collections of websites and other digitized and born-digital collections.


Work directly with other web archivists and engineers on technical issues and product improvements including user testing, help documentation, and project management.


Incubate and grow support operations for new products and services - including digital preservation, research, and other archiving and access services.


Onboarding and educating new partners including conducting webinars, trainings, one-on-one consultations, and managing service configuration, communication, and maintenance.


Assist our users in building collections, including running and managing web crawls, doing quality assurance, metadata, and other aspects of collection management.


Represent Web Archiving & Data Services and promote our services and Internet Archive via conference presentations, workshops, professional events, and community engagement.


Participate in special projects such as research, reporting, internal data analysis, marketing, and external collaborations.


Qualification and Skills:


Master’s degree in LIS/Archives or equivalent, experience working with libraries and other memory institutions providing technology services, or similar work in the non-profit sphere, is strongly preferred.


Two years experience in technical support, digital services, and/or public facing user support is preferred.


Knowledge of archiving, digital library/archives principles, or web technologies is preferred.


Experience working with external users or conducting training and workshops is a plus.


Exceptional written, communication, and presentation skills.


Comfortable learning new tools and working with engineers and a fully remote team.


Must be able to manage multiple projects, deadlines, priorities, and responsibilities.


Experience using quantitative and qualitative data to solve business problems is a plus.


Ability to work in and enjoy a loosely structured, creative work environment that rewards mission-driven self-starters.
