Director, Web Services

Job Description

 

The ASU Library’s web presence integrates the work of every unit in the library and requires exceptional leadership to be effective.  Under the direction of the Associate University Librarian for Technology Services, the Director of Library Web Services provides leadership and oversight in the development and advancement of tools, products and technical infrastructure that support library web services.  The Director of Web Services works collaboratively with library staff to maintain quality online services, uses data analytics and user feedback to evaluate the effectiveness and accessibility of current user interfaces, and identifies opportunities for improvements. They supervise a team of three, manage projects across directorates and coordinate development activities of the web team with content providers from every directorate and unit of the library. The Director of Web Services monitors trends in emerging technologies and recommends and/or implements new initiatives as appropriate and works collaboratively with university and library campus partners such as the University Technology Office and Marketing and Communications.

Essential Duties

Has leadership responsibility for the look, feel, and utility of the library’s Drupal web presence for every segment of the Library’s services and every population of users.  
Provides leadership in the development, implementation, and assessment of policies, practices and technologies designed to enhance user-centered services for the ASU library web site.
Supervises web development and the user interface design staff.
Coordinates, manages and prioritizes web development projects.
Recommends technologies in support of library web sites and content management systems.
Establishes and maintains coherence and consistency among web sites providing diverse user services.
Forms advisory or topical working groups and coordinates their activities as needed.
Assesses and improves patron experience via analytics and usability testing.
Creates and maintains appropriate documentation; gathers and evaluates relevant statistics.
Supports library staff members in the development of online digital content.
Maintains strong understanding of contemporary design, coding and accessibility standards.
Participates in the overall Arizona State University online community to ensure optimal and consistent interoperability.
 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree AND five years any combination of the following experience: web development, project management, or design; OR Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved.
Minimum 2 years’ experience working in a development team.
Proficient knowledge of Web Accessibility and Usability assessment and remediation.

Desired Qualifications

Evidence of  interpersonal and communication skills with teamwork, collaborative and negotiating skills.
Experience in work that requires organizational skills including evaluation and assessment; diagnostics and problem solving; independent and collaborative decision making.
Experience in project management, with an emphasis on website management.
Experience with dynamic delivery of web content, interactive web design and underlying architecture.
Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with library-related technology trends and applications.
Demonstrated knowledge of current internet and web standards, including best practices for maintaining accessible web sites.
Demonstrated knowledge of web markup and scripting languages, including HTML, CSS and JavaScript.
Demonstrated knowledge of web content management systems, Drupal preferred.
Experience with a relational database management system and basic knowledge of SQL.
Demonstrated knowledge of web/database integration technologies and issues.
Demonstrated knowledge of networking technologies, including basic web security best practices.

Working Environment

ASU spans four campuses across the Phoenix metropolitan area.
All staff will attend virtual meetings and must be able to use web conferencing (with video) and chat software, including Zoom and Slack.
Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting.
 Regular use of standard office equipment including, but not limited to computer workstation/laptop (keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse), printer, fax, calculator, copier, telephone and associated computer/technology peripherals.  
Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.
Regular activities require the ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
 Receives managerial review of assignments for adherence to established objectives and goals.
