Position Summary

The Director of Digital Services is responsible for developing enterprise strategies for the stewardship of wide-ranging specialized digital content and formats with the goal of integrated collection discovery and unified digital preservation of the Wisconsin Historical Society’s unique collections. The Wisconsin Historical Society’s holdings make up one of the preeminent North American history collections in the country, with a library of more than 4 million volumes, an archive of more than 105,000 cubic feet of manuscript collections, 25,000 maps and atlases, 3 million photographs, 750,000 three dimensional artifacts, and an extensive sound and moving image collection. The Society’s holdings include one of the largest newspapers and periodical collections in the country with a specialization in African-American newspapers and alternative serials publications that span the political spectrum. The Director of Digital Services leads a new section in promoting a collaborative environment that empowers staff to be creative problem-solvers while supporting and implementing inventive approaches to increase the capacity to manage digital content across WHS’s Collections Division.

Joining WHS during an exciting time of growth, transformation and innovation, the Director provides leadership in developing WHS’s new digital services unit charged with developing and implementing policies, procedures, and workflows for stewarding digitized and born-digital assets. The Director of Digital Services is responsible for the day-to-day supervision of the digitization and audio and microfilm reformatting labs as well as the management of outsourced digitization projects and services with third-party vendors. The Director of Digital Services leads divisional teams in prioritizing and planning for system and tool implementation and migration planning within a developing digital asset management ecosystem (DAME) that advances digital access and engagement with a focus on discovery, interoperability, and sustainability. The Director serves as a digital enabler as well as a change agent who will collaborate with staff from across the Division in re-envisioning WHS’s culture of innovation by further defining a digital stewardship framework that will enhance the Society’s commitment to national collection building while democratizing access to WHS’s preeminent collection.
