Emerging Technologies Specialist Position Summary
The Emerging Technologies Specialist has the dual role of developing technical improvements to library operations and service, such as scripting automated tasks and integrating data from siloed databases, while also supporting a growing demand for digital scholarship and pedagogy support. This position plays a key role in these collaborations by providing expertise in library-specific technologies that facilitate students' and researchers' active engagement with the libraries' digital collections through emerging digital scholarship methods and formats, such as digital exhibits, video production, data visualizations, text analysis, interactive maps, and born-digital books. The Emerging Technologies Specialist partners with library and teaching faculty, University of Dayton IT (UDit), and the Center for Online Learning to implement, adapt, secure, and maintain sustainable library software and systems.
Required Qualifications
Coursework in programming, web development, or a combination of education and experience demonstrating an ability to implement, design, or adapt web applications
Proactive quick learner, with a strong sense of curiosity and enthusiasm for learning new technologies
Proficiency in one or more programming languages, such as Javascript, Python, or Ruby
Proficiency in web design markup languages, such as HTML and CSS
Comfortable working with the command line in Linux and/or Windows environments
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Ability to communicate effectively with both end users and technology service providers
Ability to work independently in a highly collaborative environment
Preferred Qualifications
Post-secondary degree
Background working with libraries, archives, museums, schools, or non-profit educational
Experience writing Shell or Bash scripts to automate tasks
Experience working with relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL
