This is a probationary, 12-month, tenure-track position at the Senior Assistant/Associate Librarian rank with an expected start date of Spring 2022; salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. Librarians in the CSU system enjoy full faculty status and as such are eligible for campus service opportunities, sabbatical and other leaves, and additional benefits. Librarians are represented under Unit 3 of the California Faculty Association (CFA). JOB DUTIES:
Under the general direction of the Head of Library Systems & Information Technology Services, (“Systems”) the Digital Initiatives Librarian will have responsibilities in four main areas:
Working across departments, sets digitizing project goals and objectives, and recommends solutions (staffing, process, equipment, and workflow) to achieve objectives.
Evaluates software and equipment related to digitization, such as scanners, optical character recognition (OCR) software, and repository systems.
Creates and maintains policies and procedures, standards, best practices, digitization workflows, training manuals, and internal technical documentation.
Hires, trains, schedules, and supervises student workers responsible for the creation of digital assets.
Manages workflow, timelines, benchmarks, and reporting for multiple projects at different stages.
Ensures quality control of digitized assets and metadata.
Serves on the Collection Development Committee’s Digital Collections Subcommittee as an ex officio member to vet and prioritize digitization proposals.
Works with the Library Systems department and vendors as needed to help select, manage, and upgrade the library’s digital asset management (DAM) system.
Oversees the creation and maintenance of digital objects (including imaging, ingest, archiving, and metadata work) and organizes them in the DAM.
Maintains fluency with metadata schemas and description protocols such as MARC21, MODS, Dublin Core, and linked data.
Ensures that digital assets conform to accessibility requirements.
Researches and stays current with recognized and evolving standards both for the preservation and dissemination of digital assets.
Develops digital preservation plans and ensures that digital assets meet preservation standards.
Serves as practical expert for digital scholarship initiatives; advises and partners with faculty and/or campus units and programs on digitization projects and digital scholarship in their subject areas.
Participates in consortial initiatives and working groups within and/or outside the California State University System.
Participates in grant writing and funding opportunities for digitization initiatives.
Responsibilities as a Library Faculty Member
Contributes to library-wide decision-making. Serves on library committees as needed.
Scholarly or creative achievement, contributions to the library and the university, professional development, and contributions to the community are all responsibilities of library faculty.REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
1. American Library Association-accredited Master’s degree or accredited international equivalent.
2. Significant experience working with a digital asset management (DAM) system used in a library, archives, or museum.
3. Experience digitizing materials in various formats from distinctive collections.
4. Experience with project management of digitized and/or born-digital assets in a library, archives, or museum.
5. Strong understanding of metadata schemas, archival file formats, and/or FADGI Technical Guidelines for Digitizing Cultural Heritage Materials.
6. Strong oral, written, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
7. Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and the ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
1. Experience supervising staff and/or student workers.
2. Knowledge of digital archiving practices and experience with digital preservation systems.
3. Demonstrated experience in developing working partnerships with academic units on a college or university campus.
4. Familiarity with digital scholarship applications for data mining, data manipulation, and data visualization.
