This session will provide a practical introduction to backend programming for beginners, which will establish a baseline of knowledge to participate in upcoming classes including "Big Data Tools for Citation Analysis" and "Using CADRE for Digital Humanities and Computational Social Science Research." The instructor will provide an introduction to writing basic scripts using Python in Jupyter Notebook to create data visualizations of bibliometric data from the Microsoft Academic Graph dataset. All computing in the session will take place in the cloud through the CADRE platform, and participants will gain a basic understanding of CADRE and other skills to build upon in more advanced sessions. No experience with programming is necessary to participate in this session.

In this course, attendees will learn how to use bibliometric and citation network data to answer humanities and social science research questions. With the rise of Big Data and computational methods the humanities and social sciences are able to use innovative methods to study new research questions. Using citation data scholars can study the emergence of new academic disciplines, the emergence of new technologies, cultural narratives, and innovation among other topics. No programming knowledge or technical experience is required for this course. For participants with no prior experience, the free session "Visualization Tools for Science of Science Queries" may help lay the groundwork for this session.

The Collaborative Archive & Data Research Environment (CADRE) addresses the IMLS' "National Digital Platform" priority area by addressing a critical emergent issue faced by academic libraries: providing sustainable, affordable, and standardized text- and data-mining services for licensed big datasets, as well as open and non-consumptive datasets too large or unwieldy to work with in existing research library environments. By sharing costs across a large number of academic libraries, CADRE will create a cloud-based solution for making these data available to its member institutions--with appropriate security, stewardship, and storage--at a fraction of what it would cost them to do alone.
