Job Summary

This position will support development and day-to-day operations of a Digital Health Humanities Institute Pilot. The goal of the Institute is to guide and support faculty in their engagement with digital tools and methods to facilitate interdisciplinary scholarship that will advance understanding of the profound effects of illness and disease on patients, health professionals, and the social worlds in which they live and work.

This one-year pilot will develop and implement curriculum for an educational program to inform faculty (staff, students) about the available digital resources at UCSF and other institutions and provide training on how to use computational tools and methods for digital health humanities projects. The Digital Health Humanities Institute will utilize the UCSF archives digital collections corpus, in particular, the AIDS History Project collections and the Industry Documents Library collections. The Institute will include a variety of classes (half-day classes, ten in total) and six all-day workshops geared towards building a community of practice for UCSF scholars who are conducting research at the intersection of health sciences, health humanities and digital humanities. At the conclusion of the pilot, the library team will conduct assessment of the Institute’s program to analyze its impact on education and research that will inform future requests for permanent funding.

The Institute’s Digital Humanities Research Accelerator will provide support for faculty research by offering expertise in digital research skills and programming, including project design and management, prototype development, computational methods, and digital publishing. The Accelerator will bring together an interdisciplinary team from diverse departments (Library: Archives & Special Collections, Industry Documents Library, Data Science Initiative; Bakar Computational Health Sciences Institute, Population Health and Health Equity program, UCSF NLP (natural language processing group) and others) to help develop and implement faculty-led digital research projects.

The pilot will conclude with a digital symposium hosted by the library that will showcase available digital collections and Digital Humanities projects of participating faculty. The symposium’s goal is to highlight the possibilities for projects and interdisciplinary collaborations for faculty in research and education.

Required Qualifications

 

Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Experience, as demonstrated by a history of successful projects, with computational techniques used in digital humanities (examples include: natural language processing, computer vision and image processing, machine learning, mapping and GIS, database design, creative computing, game design, network analysis, and data visualization)
Working knowledge of e-learning strategies including but not limited to courses (e.g., processes and technologies, etc.).
Proficiency in analytical, verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills, collaboration and negotiation skills.
Demonstrated analytical skills to conduct analysis and develop recommendations, demonstrating organization and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications

 

Experience teaching at the university level.
Knowledge of data science languages and tools such as in Python, R, JavaScript ES6+, GitHub, and others.
Proven program planning and management of projects.
Proficiency in planning, resourcing and monitoring effective design life cycles of training and other learning and performance solutions to support the organization.
Working knowledge of adult learning theories and education methodologies.
Working knowledge and skills with relevant business software systems.
Working knowledge of the technical tools and platforms required to achieve the delivery of engaging and media-rich online learning content, and of trends in the use and effectiveness of educational technology and learning.
Working knowledge of instructional design principles and learning strategies, including needs analysis, backwards design, learning outcomes and assessment design, and instructional approaches including lecture, discussion, activities, projects, etc.
Working knowledge of organization policies and procedures, including policies that impact online course development.
Working knowledge of functional area and understands how work within one course may impact work being done on other courses or in other areas.
