Job Description Summary
The Senior Applications Developer is a skilled, collaborative developer on the Digital Library Development team. They create sustainable software for multiple, complex digital library projects for repository systems, web platforms, discovery tools, and business intelligence. The projects include new and existing web applications that serve thousands of users per day with varying levels of research experience and a wide variety of information and research needs.
Project work is designed and executed in teams comprised of software engineers, web specialists, a UX Researcher/Designer, subject matter experts, and operations staff that emphasize collaboration and creative problem solving across a range of disciplines. The position reports to the Director of Application Development, and supports a wide range of computing services that sustain daily web-based operations and facilitate teaching, learning and research efforts of the University. Digital library development makes use of a full range of skills, including coding, technical architectures, application specifications, database design, digital accessibility, and workflow analysis. The Developer is responsible, along with other programmers, for testing, quality assurance, and the life cycle management of library applications. The Developer is a participant in and at times leads project teams to implement IT services, technical solutions, and designs. The position also provides expertise on metadata that are relevant to digital library implementation and the development of local, reusable methodologies for metadata interactions.
The Developer operates with a high degree of independence and professionalism in managing job responsibilities, work priorities, methodologies, and routines. The position requires a readiness to research IT developments and tools, to apply the findings of research to design and programming, and in general, to bring best practices and the latest concepts in the field to application development. The senior developer participates in IT planning as well as the execution of planning priorities.
The work requires close collaboration with a variety of audiences, including Library staff at all levels, project managers and developers across campus, Penn faculty and researchers, and IT professionals from other institutions and commercial firms. The Developer must be highly effective working in groups and with subject matter experts who may not be IT professionals. The successful candidate will join a team of energetic and creative contributors. Responsibilities include timely and responsive communication, fulfillment of deadlines, and a readiness to engage in the bidirectional sharing of knowledge and expertise with colleagues.

Job Description
Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Develop and deploy digital library applications to support teaching, learning, and research at the University including technical architectures, specifications, coding, database design, & workflow analysis.
Support optimal operation in collaboration with operations staff of software, user interface, databases, indexes, and other elements of the Libraries’ digital library architecture.
Develop and deploy data models for optimal storage, retrieval, and delivery of metadata and digital content using RDBMS or noSQL Databases.
Perform detailed analysis and design of new systems, and modify the design of existing ones to meet the needs of library system users.
Provide technical expertise and advice in collaboration with functional experts to inform, enable, and extend the capabilities of the Libraries’ programs and goals.
Implement and apply reusable web interface design patterns in collaboration with web specialists and the UX Researcher/Designer.
Maintain current awareness of trends and tools for back-end and front-end development in the technical and library professional communities.
Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications:
Required:
A Bachelor's Degree is preferred and 3 years to 5 years of related experience is required.
Demonstrated experience with a programming language, preferably Ruby, PHP, or Java.
Proficient understanding of client-side scripting and JavaScript frameworks.
Experience required working in a Linux server environment and using continuous integration/deployment tools.
Motivation to stay abreast of current coding practices and make continuous improvements on work.
Ability to effectively manage multiple concurrent projects; use time management, prioritization skills, and independent judgment.
Must possess strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Effective interpersonal communication skills.
Preferred:
Preference will be given to candidates with experience participating in open source software communities, such as Samvera, Dspace, Blacklight, or Drupal.
Experience working in multidisciplinary cross-agency project teams is highly preferred.

$89,000 -- $95,000 commensurate with education and experience.
