The Copyright Librarian leads The Ohio State University Libraries program for offering support, services, and policies that address copyright and intellectual property. This is a full-time tenure-track faculty position. The Copyright Librarian provides operational, tactical, and strategic leadership for University Libraries copyright services and is responsible for developing and promoting educational guidelines and programs around rights, permissions, and fair use as they pertain to the scholarly research life cycle. Reporting to the Scholarly Sharing Strategist, the Copyright Librarian heads the Copyright Services unit and supervises the Copyright Services Coordinator. The Copyright Librarian develops policy and practice affecting the use and dissemination of library-created, -digitized, -published, -stewarded, -owned, or -licensed content and is responsible for the development and modification of copyright policies, procedures, and processes for risk assessment and risk management for units of University Libraries. Leading our services for copyright at a leading teaching and research institution, the Copyright Librarian supports our campus faculty, staff, and students in navigating copyright issues in the creation, use, dissemination, and open sharing of scholarly work. Copyright Services is a key strategic partner with units in University Libraries and with units across campus including the Office of Legal Affairs, the Office of Technology and Digital Innovation, the Graduate School, and the Health Sciences Library.

Key Responsibilities

Provides vision, focus, and leadership for copyright services within University Libraries.
Manages the staff and operations in the Copyright Services unit.
Engages with partners within University Libraries, with other campus constituencies, and with external partners to support the advancement of strategic activities in copyright services and scholarly sharing.
Fosters a close working relationship with the Office of Legal Affairs and the Office of Technology and Digital Innovation.
Leads development and implementation of copyright policies and strategies that enable broader access, use, and preservation of University Libraries collections.
Develops recommendations on rights issues related to University Libraries collections, their stewardship, and related services including digital collections, publishing agreements, author agreements, and gift agreements.
Leads instructional activities relating to copyright, fair use, and best practices in the management of author’s rights and appropriate reuse of copyrighted content.
Provides guidance to faculty, researchers, authors, staff, and students on issues related to the application of copyright law and university policies, in particular as they relate to ownership of copyright under Ohio State’s Intellectual Property Policy.
Promotes engagement with and leadership contributions to national conversations relating to copyright.

Required Qualifications

An ALA-accredited master’s degree, a master’s degree with specialization in archives, a master’s degree in museum studies or a comparable graduate degree in one of the above fields from a non-U.S. university, reviewed on a case-by-case basis, or a Juris Doctor degree (JD) from an ABA-accredited institution.
Minimum of three years of relevant professional experience including progressively responsible leadership experience.
Expertise in copyright law as it relates to fair use and library exemptions, Open Access, author’s rights, and scholarly use of intellectual property.
Experience building effective partnerships and sustaining relationships in a collaborative and complex environment.
Demonstrated ability to effectively articulate and communicate complex legal and policy concepts to non-specialist audiences.

Desired Qualifications

Experience providing guidance to faculty, researchers, authors, and students on issues related to the application of copyright law, fair use, and author’s rights.
Evidence of contribution and engagement with organizations or multi-institutional initiatives in the arena of copyright services.
Evidence of successful and creative management of staff and services.
Experience in successfully presenting educational programs and resources to diverse audiences.

Appointment
This is a full-time, regular, 12-month appointment as a tenure-track faculty member. The candidate will be required to meet university and Libraries requirements for promotion and tenure. Faculty rank at either Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor are dependent on qualifications and experience. A flexible work arrangement may be considered for this position.

Salary
$75,000 to $85,000 annual salary negotiable.
