Dear colleagues,
The IIIF Consortium and the IIIF Maps Technical Specification Group are
pleased to announce that the Georeference Extension specification has been
officially published:
https://iiif.io/api/extension/georef/
This extension unlocks new capabilities for working with digitized maps,
including the ability to overlay any IIIF-compliant map image on top of a
standard web map with no specialized GIS software or file formats required.
The new specification makes it possible to use any IIIF-compliant image in
a mapping context (for example, as a base layer for historical town and
city views) and allows other functionality, like the ability to search for
collection items via map-based interfaces.
You can read more about it here, along with links to other community tools
and developments the Maps TSG has been working on recently:
https://iiif.io/news/2023/05/15/georef-extension-published/
Many thanks to the co-chairs of the IIIF Maps groups for the great work on
this front, to the many IIIF community members who contributed to the
development of the maps extensions, and to the IIIF Editors for guiding the
process to publication.
