If you really want to go hog-wild, check out Octoprint and Octolapse. The
latter provides for recording triggers based on 3D printer behavior, that
is, it can record significant printing events and "ignore" the boring ones
(at least as far as I can tell). The first link below goes to an article

more. If I had the time, I'd delve into this, but alas...
