Stanford Medicine is seeking a motivated and resourceful Metadata Librarian (Librarian 2) responsible for the creation and maintenance of metadata representing Lane Medical Library’s digital and physical collections of resources. This position provides metadata management expertise and procedural/workflow consistency while monitoring external developments and the changing needs of the department.

Reporting to the Director of Resource Management, the Metadata Librarian will be responsible for defining and investigating the evolution of metadata workflows, practices, and policies at Lane Library with the greater Stanford University library system. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing metadata staff, including assigning projects and work as necessary, setting goals and priorities, and answering and responding to any metadata-related questions.

The position works closely with other staff to influence and achieve our collective goals in support of the School’s research, clinical and educational mission.


Due to the nature of this position, hybrid work will be considered, although fully remote will not.  This position will be based on the Stanford campus and will be considered for an option of telecommuting from the Bay Area (hybrid of working 2-3 days on-site), subject to operational need.


Core Duties

  *   Acts as Lane’s metadata expert by answering questions from staff, colleagues around campus, and patrons regarding metadata for all types of library resources, including workflows and processes related to cataloging work at Lane.
  *   Responsible for daily metadata and cataloging decisions and workflows, including original cataloging and clean-up of all new materials cataloged by copy catalogers.
  *   Responsible for coordinating and running batch edits and batch loading.
  *   Captures, creates, and transforms bibliographic and authority metadata in MAchine-Readable Cataloging (MARC) format using various systems, including MARCEdit and other batch editing tools.
  *   Make recommendations for the upgrade of electronic and manual resource tools.
  *   Analyze the technical and access needs for a unit of the library system.
  *   Evaluate and make recommendations to management on plans, operations and policies for a library unit.
  *   Co-lead in training staff to do cataloging and metadata work in FOLIO, OCLC, and with other tools like MarcEdit.
  *   Manage staff or student staff.


Education & Experience (Required)

Advanced Degree in Library Science or a relevant academic discipline with demonstrated understanding of academic libraries and two or more years of relevant experience in a relevant library setting or a combination of education and relevant experience.



Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Required)

  *   Experience with relevant aspects of library operations including understanding of contemporary library practices, trends and emerging technologies.
  *   Demonstrated understanding of the broad scope of library operations with ability to understand how their role interacts with the rest of the organization.
  *   Ability to work effectively in a team environment and negotiate issues with people from different parts of the library.
  *   Ability to identify challenges and opportunities, engage others in their resolution and recommend appropriate courses of action.
  *   Demonstrated ability to evaluate online resources in terms of content quality, functionality and user interface issues.
  *   Ability to independently perform complex job functions such as collection management reviews, preparation of major exhibits, developing policies for business practices.
  *   Consistent display of strong verbal and written communication skills.
  *   Demonstrated bibliographic expertise or basic managerial/supervisory skills.



Desired Qualifications

  *   Experience in management, leadership, and/or supervision of staff, including some experience with managing projects or project management
  *   Experience in metadata management, including authority control, using relevant standards, Library of Congress classification, RDA, and MARC formats, as well as familiarity with BibFrame and linked data.
  *   Working knowledge of OCLC Connexion and/or WorldShare and library platform systems, preferably FOLIO
  *   Demonstrated knowledge and expertise with evolving standards, trends, and issues in metadata
  *   Understanding of the application of Medical Subject Headings (MeSH)
  *   Experience with MarcEdit, OpenRefine, or other data manipulation tools
  *   Knowledge of data mapping and metadata transformation tasks
  *   Experience automating batch record updates or changes
  *   Working knowledge of additional non-English language(s)
  *   Demonstrated analytical, organizational, and decision-making skills with an attention to detail
  *   Ability to communicate effectively
  *   Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment with a diverse population of staff



Expected pay range: $83,000 to $101,110
