Hi Charles!
I recently deleted TrendMicro from my Win10 device because it has gone the
way of AI. In doing so, I discovered you cannot simply delete any decent
antivirus from your machine (in case hackers acquire your credentials or
manage to install keystroke trackers). Instead, they require you to use a
separate tool from them if you want to delete. However, if you don't mind
AI, Trend Micro does not sell your data to outside companies and only uses
tracking information for the purposes of their internal business activities.
I've found Bitdefender has the same 'constant prompt to update' problem
that Avast and Malwarebytes have, which makes them akin to malware in my
mind.
Last I checked, clamAV can detect but not remove viruses.
Windows Defender has a poorer detection success rate if you don't enable
Cloud-based protection, so if you choose to use that, you can disable
"Automatic sample submission" to keep your files from being auto-uploaded
to Microsoft. (They say they delete them after upload and scan, but even if
so, it is a bit of a bandwidth hog.)
Warmly,
Risa
