Dear colleagues,
You may see this news on more than one list that you are signed up for: The LOCKSS Program at Stanford Libraries is pleased to announce that LOCKSS 2.0-beta1 is feature-complete, and now available for download! LOCKSS 2.x has been fully re-architected, and includes new features and functionality that will make the "lots of copies keep stuff safe" approach to digital preservation applicable to even more collections and communities. For more details about enhancements, technical requirements, and the migration process for existing users, please see our latest blog post<https://www.lockss.org/news/lockss-20-beta1-now-available>.
LOCKSS 2.x is fully compatible with LOCKSS 1.x, so each individual node in existing LOCKSS networks can migrate at any time to the new version from LOCKSS 1.78, the latest release. The Migration Guide<https://docs.lockss.org/en/latest/migration/index.html> on our documentation portal describes the process for new-host and same-host migrations. Please note that at this time, we recommend that GLN and CLOCKSS nodes wait to migrate; while LOCKSS 2.0-beta1 already has full functionality, these much larger networks will benefit from additional scalability and performance improvements that are coming with subsequent beta releases.
LOCKSS Program staff are happy to provide individualized support and answer any questions users may have about upgrading hosts, sourcing hardware, or deciding if and when it's the right time to migrate if you are participating in multiple networks (such as the GLN and USDocs)-just email [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>. We will also be hosting weekly LOCKSS Migration office hours<https://www.lockss.org/event/series/lockss-migration-office-hours> for users who have questions about the migration process.
We are grateful to the Mellon Foundation's Public Knowledge Program<https://www.mellon.org/grant-programs/public-knowledge> for financial support for the re-engineering of LOCKSS, and to the Michigan Digital Preservation Network<https://mipres.org/> for field-testing alpha versions of LOCKSS 2.x and documentation prior to this release. With this exciting launch, we look forward to welcoming new users and networks to the vibrant LOCKSS digital preservation community!
Regards,
Snowden Becker (she/her)
