Call for Proposals: Journal of Library Metadata Special Issue – “Metadata in Late Capitalism”
Many thanks to all who have already submitted. We have decided to extend the deadline for this CFP to Friday, December 6.
The intersection of emerging technologies, sociotechnical realities, and the increasing commodification/monetization of data has raised new issues concerning the role of library metadata in an uncharted information landscape. This era of Late Capitalism has introduced varied challenges for metadata and critical analyses of current and future problems can help illuminate a path forward for catalogers and metadata professionals and help insulate them from purely reactive tendencies. The aim of this special issue is to provide a lens on the particular challenges our economic and technological landscape has introduced to metadata, and provide solutions, analyses, and speculative discourses to understand them.
Suggested topics include, but are not limited to:
* Tensions between AI and metadata in indexing and retrieval
* Corporate hegemony and search (i.e. vendor lock, algorithmic preferencing)
* New media and the limits of bibliographic description
* Reification of data models in information systems
* Data monopolies and vectoralization
* Environmental costs of metadata production
Submission Instructions
Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before Friday December 6, 2024, a proposal (up to 1,000 words) clearly explaining the objectives and concerns of his or her proposed article. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified shortly afterwards, about the status of their proposals. Full manuscripts (3,000-7,000 words) are expected to be submitted by March 15, 2025. All submitted manuscripts will be reviewed on a double-anonymous review basis.
