I can find nothing to suggest that Firefox converts image formats on
download, and that certainly isn't my experience. If it's saving something
as filename.webp, that means it's a WebP image. Does the website also have
a GIF version, and does it decide on the fly which one to send you based on
your request headers? Possibly. Will the plug-in you link to get the
website to send the GIF version instead? Possibly. Myself, I wouldn't worry
about it and I'd rather minimize the plug-ins I run. Can you say what's
wrong with receiving WebP?*
I understand that Firefox is your preferred browser, but "What happens when
you try this in a different browser?" is a pretty standard diagnostic tool.
Hold your nose and check what Edge or Chrome (or Opera...) does.
[*Yeah, I know, for a lot of us, WebP = Spawn o' Google = Evil.]
