The Indiana University Digital Library Program is pleased to announce
the initial launch of the Indiana University Sheet Music web site at
<http://www.dlib.indiana.edu/collections/sheetmusic/>. The site
currently provides access to metadata and some digital images from two
sheet music collections from the Indiana University Lilly Library.
Metadata is available for the approximately 24,000 pieces in the Lilly
Library's Sam DeVincent Collection of American Sheet Music, along with
digital images from over 1,000 pieces in this collection. Metadata for
over 500 pieces from the Lilly's Starr Sheet Music Collection is
available, as are digital images for most of the Starr items.

This site supplements access to metadata for these two sheet music
collections that has been available to Open Archives Initiative (OAI)
metadata harvesters such as the Sheet Music Consortium
<http://digital.library.ucla.edu/sheetmusic/>, the UIUC Digital Gateway
to Cultural Heritage Materials <http://oai.grainger.uiuc.edu/>, and the
University of Michigan's OAIster project
<http://oaister.umdl.umich.edu/o/oaister/> since early 2003. We will
soon update these harvestable metadata records to include links to
content we have digitized so that users of these harvesting services may
directly view the sheet music that is online. We will also be adding
digital images for approximately 1,700 additional pieces from the
DeVincent collection in the near future.

Digitization of sheet music for this site has been funded in 2003 and
2004 through an NEH Challenge Grant Endowment to Indiana University.
