ABOUT THE CDL:  The California Digital Library (CDL) is a collaborative
effort of the ten University of California campuses for the design,
creation, and implementation of innovative systems that support the
shared collections of the UC system and its partners.  CDL collections
and services support instruction and research throughout the University
and include the Melvyl Catalog, abstracting and indexing databases,
full-text databases of scholarly publications, the Online Archive of
California, patron initiated requesting of print materials and others.

RESPONSIBILITIES:  The selected candidate, as a member of the Digital
Library Services group, will provide program management, coordination
and oversight of CDL's bibliographic services, including the Melvyl
Catalog, Request interlibrary loan services, and UC-eLinks reference
linking service.  These three services are among the most heavily used
of CDL's services and provide core support for research and teaching.

The position requires substantial innovation and creativity to identify
new ways to use bibliographic services to delivery library resources to
users' desktops.  The Manager will lead the migration of the Melvyl
Catalog to a major software version upgrade, involving complex
communications with the software vendor, coordinate tasks and priorities
for technical staff or coordinate priorities generated by the technical
staff with other groups, develop a communication strategy for campus
library staff end users.

The Manager of Bibliographic Services will be responsible for long term
planning for the major bibliographic services, including upgrades, new
features, software vendor changes.  In addition, the Manager will be
responsible for identifying policy issues and recommending solutions for
bibliographic services, subject to review by other groups as needed.

The Manager will also guide the development of new CDL systems, in
collaboration with other managers, that are reliant on bibliographic
data systems.  Serve as primary contact with software vendor account
representatives and development managers instrumental in the delivery of
CDL bibliographic systems.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Master's degree in an appropriate area, such as library
and information science or equivalent combination of education and
experience.  Demonstrated success in relevant and complex project
management, preferably involving multiple institutions.  Knowledge of
digital library technologies, issues, and trends, especially those
pertaining to bibliographic systems.  Knowledge of digital library
standards for description and access (e.g., TEI, OAI, SGML, XML, HTML,
Dublin Core, MARC, etc.) and awareness of best practices.  Knowledge of
both traditional library services, for example, interlibrary loan,
reference linking, electronic resource management, cataloging of digital
materials, electronic document delivery.  Superior oral and written
communication skills. Superior management and interpersonal skills and
ability to work effectively with diverse constituencies.
