We've tried both and AND seems to be what people expect.  You may be
able to get by using OR if the results are ranked and those satisfying
the AND test are placed before the OR results.

What do you think is more appropriate (and intuitive) for a search
engine if the user gives no boolean, "and" or "or"?

default to "institute AND paper AND science" or "institute OR paper OR

I'm just sort of curious what other people's take on this might be.
