Metadata Analyst and Head of the Cataloging Section

The University of Southern California's Information Services Division (ISD)
is seeking an experienced Metadata Analyst and Head of the Cataloging
Section.  The Metadata Analyst and Head of the Cataloging Section is
responsible for management of the Cataloging Section and creation and
maintenance of a variety of catalog records (including DC & MARC) using
various systems. The work is in transition and involves continuing existing
processes and participating in the introduction and deployment of new
systems and procedures. As changes are introduced, the mix of
responsibilities will shift increasingly toward new metadata control
mechanisms for digital resources. The individual will supervise and manage
three to five staff including librarians, paraprofessionals, and
non-professionals; create and maintain metadata for all types of library
resources. The mix of materials is in flux, but increasingly digital. The
incumbent will identify and downloads or create descriptive cataloging,
verifying and/or supplying appropriate subject headings, category codes, and
LC classification; uses Sirsi, OCLC, RLIN, WordCat, LC Authorities, and
other systems to accomplish these tasks within established guidelines; works
on special projects to add or enhance existing records for various purposes,
such as the Open Archive Initiative; reviews and maintains URLs for digital
resources based on link checking software; investigates and recommends
solutions in various metadata problems as part of introducing new systems
and procedures; performs item conversion in Sirsi, including bar-coding
items and changing processing status; withdraws library materials,
suppresses records, etc.; and maintains statistics using Excel.

Campus/Location: University Park Campus.

This is a full time position.

Minimum Qualifications: Master's Degree with two years experience, however,
combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education.
Experience as a manager, preferably in a large catalog department; excellent
judgment and decision-making skills; ability to deal with change, ambiguity
and complex problems and to understand inter-system relationships; library
skills, especially in metadata application, cataloging (MARC/AACRII/AACRIII)
authority control, database searching, using automated bibliographic
systems, equivalent to a minimum of four years of experience; ability to
apply traditional cataloging knowledge in evolving metadata management
environment; familiarity and facility in working with vagaries of digital
media; ability to adhere to rigorous accuracy and thoroughness requirements;
ability to learn new systems and procedures quickly; flexibility to work
independently and as part of a team; ability to communicate both verbally
and in writing for understanding and expressing complex topics effectively;
and computer skills: integrated library systems, database systems, word
processing, spreadsheets, as well as comfort in dealing with a variety of
changes systems licensed for users.
