The Harvard University Library Office for Information Systems is seeking a creative team player to join our Library Digital Initiative (LDI) software development team. As Digital Library Software Engineer, you will develop leading edge web based applications for a rapidly growing world class digital library that currently stores over 10 terrabytes of electronic images, audio, books, archival finding aids, and geospatial data sets. Office for Information System team responsibilities include the creation, storage, retrieval, and archiving of digital resources and user friendly context-specific software products necessary to discover, manage, and display them. The Digital Library Software Engineer will be part of a software development group responsible for the development and maintenance of applications; working with users to refine requirements; developing technical designs and specifications; translating specification documents into program design; programming the specification in the most efficient manner; creating and maintaining clear task lists; thorough testing of completed software; ongoing maintenance and updating of code; documenting programs; keeping up with technological changes. Opportunities exist to lead user interface design activities by designing web based user interface prototypes, developing user interface standards that apply across multiple public applications, and conducting small scale usability testing and feedback into designs. Project management responsibilities may include managing one or more development projects by developing task lists, estimating effort, determining milestones, and monitoring and reporting on progress.

Requirements: MS in computer or information science or equivalent experience. Demonstrated experience in designing and implementing high quality, easy-to-use, and highly efficient web based user interfaces using Java, JSP, and an MVC framework such as Struts. Minimum of 5 years java software development experience required, with experience working with digital collections and industry standard metadata formats. Strong verbal and written English language communication skills, with team oriented interpersonal skills. Experience designing, developing, deploying, and managing open Internet applications utilizing Unix and World Wide Web technologies required. Experience with Oracle RDBMS, XML, and Java J2SE required. JDBC, DOM, SAX, Tomcat, perl, Lucene, XSLT, servlet development, and XML database experience a plus.  Experience with digital library software for managing audio, visual, and archival finding aid information a plus.
