Hello, Greg: I'm forwarding this response from my colleague here at Stanford who is leading the metadata efforts on the project he's describing. Nancy J. Hoebelheinrich Metadata Coordinator Digital Library Systems and Services Stanford University Libraries / Academic InfoResources Stanford, CA 94305-8408 [log in to unmask] voice: 650-725-6843 fax: 650-725-0547 ******************************** Hi Greg, At Stanford and the University of California at Santa Barbara we are comparing the FGDC content standard for means of preservation of GIS datasets against other data model that have been created specifically for preservation purposes (PREMIS <http://www.oclc.org/research/projects/pmwg/>and the Data Model for Managing and Preserving Geospatial Electronic Records developed by CIESIN). This investigation is focused on several preservation concepts (environment, computing platform, semantics, terminology, provenance, provider, quality, and appropriate use) and looking at gaps between the models and the content standard. The results of the paper will will be available for the preservation and geospatial community to comment on. Stanford is also looking at what elements are contained in the FGDC content standard that lend themselves to preservation needs. And can these needs be extended to the myriad of GIS data sources (vector, raster, complex such as shapefiles and simple such as geotifs).
