With my colleagues, Sarah Shreeves, Tim Cole (UIUC) and Jenn Riley (IU),
I am pleased to announce that IMLS has funded the University of Illinois
and Indiana University to jointly create a training program that will
address the needs of library, museum, and cultural heritage
professionals in the creation, development, and use of shareable
descriptive metadata. We plan to develop and conduct weeklong online
training courses that professionals can take at their own pace to learn
what constitutes shareable metadata, how to think critically about their
metadata within their local context, and how to produce shareable
metadata. In addition, the team will hold a series of onsite workshops
at different locations to train cultural heritage professionals in the
development and use of shareable metadata. As well as Illinois and
Indiana, locations will include Emory University, the Collaborative
Digitization Program in Colorado, and the Online Archive of California.
