Systems Librarian & Manager, Systems Integration

Stanford University Libraries and Academic Information Resources (SULAIR)
seeks an innovative, analytic and results-oriented Systems Librarian to lead
the development and enhancement of the Libraries' management and information
delivery systems, as well as to manage the operations, maintenance and
integration of the Integrated Library System (ILS) and its associated
components. The successful candidate will bring a combination of expertise
in library science; knowledge of computer science; and hands on experience
and ability in systems analysis, application development and project
management.

This position provides technical, process and management leadership within
the Digital Library Systems and Services (DLSS) group in SULAIR.
Specifically, the Systems Librarian provides expertise on the Libraries'
business needs and processes, correlates those with current and emerging
information technologies, and identifies and helps implement new systems to
further the Libraries' mission and services. Active exploration and
definition of new systems that "push the envelope" of traditional library
practices and models is a key role for the Systems Librarian, as is the
methodical and successful deployment of selected technologies into a stable
and supportable state.

Within DLSS, the Systems Librarian also manages the Systems Integration
group, and serves as a contributing member of that team. This unit creates
and maintains tools and systems for describing, managing, and delivering
digital and traditional library collections, and is responsible for
operating, maintaining and enhancing the library management system and OPAC
(currently Sirsi's Unicorn and iLink) and closely-related systems. As the
manager of this group, the Systems Librarian leads the team in the research,
development, implementation, and support of automated systems that integrate
Stanford's distributed digital resources with vendor packages, plus local
customizations and open source components.

This position reports to the Associate Director of Digital Library Systems
and Services (DLSS). DLSS is an integrated service organization responsible
for producing and preserving digital collections, providing electronic
discovery and delivery of digital resources, running library services and IT
infrastructure, and conducting research and development of new technologies.

As part of DLSS, the Systems Librarian works closely with the other members
of SULAIR's technical staff, providing analytical support to the development
efforts of the Digital Production Services and Development and Research
groups, and integrating their systems with those of the ILS. The Systems
Librarian also works closely with managers and line staff across Technical
Services and Collections & Services to identify, prioritize, test and
implement enhancements to the ILS and SULAIR's discovery and resource
delivery environments.

Responsibilities

*	Provide business and technical analysis for library processes and
supporting systems with a focus on discovery, delivery and integration of
resources. Provide hands-on analytical support for Cataloging, Circulation
and the OPAC. Design, specify, and integrate Web-based information services,
applying relevant library, metadata and IT standards to current and emerging
Internet technologies.

*	Manage the implementation and maintenance of services and
applications provided by the Systems Integration team, including vendor
contacts, relations and negotiations. Oversee the 24x7 operation of the
library management system and associated services. Translate business
requirements to system enhancements, balance maintenance and operations of
the library management system with enhancements to the overall environment,
set corresponding priorities and timelines; assign resources and manage
implementation. Troubleshoot, resolve and report problems with existing
systems.

*	Manage projects around enhancements, upgrades, development and
delivery of new services.

*	Supervise the Systems Integration team within DLSS. Set and review
goals and performance objectives for a team of four analysts and
programmers; manage and support professional development; coordinate ongoing
work and projects.

*	Act as part of DLSS leadership team, helping produce a holistic
vision for the group so it can function as a cohesive, effective, high
performance team. Provide library expertise and analytical support for
projects across SULAIR, including digitization, preservation and special
projects for Technical Services and Collections & Services.

Qualifications

An advanced degree in Library Science or equivalent is required.
Undergraduate or graduate work in computer science or internet technologies,
or equivalent, highly desirable. Familiarity with application development
processes and methods, including requirements gathering, specification,
human-centered design, quality assurance, usability testing and release
management, highly desirable.

Expertise in Library and Information Science standards, practices and
marketplace as demonstrated by at least 3 years working in Libraries (or
equivalent), and a demonstrated ability to develop, maintain, and support
library or digital library systems. This generally implies having a working
knowledge of a large Integrated Library System, Unix/Linux operating
systems, relational databases, scripting and/or programming languages, data
formats, metadata standards used for library and digital library systems,
and search and retrieval protocols. Knowledge of library functional
operations is required. Familiarity with systems administration or database
administration is a plus.

Successful management and supervisory experience in an academic or technical
environment. Proven project management and project leadership skills. Proven
effective interpersonal skills, along with clear written and verbal skills.
Core to success of the candidate is the ability to translate the mission and
goals of SULAIR into delivered IT infrastructure support and digital
resource management and delivery.

Must be proactive, focused, and energetic to meet commitments, manage
project objectives, priorities and people while ensuring strategic focus is
maintained to best achieve the mission of SULAIR.
