Senior Programmer / Analyst (SL - 4)

POSITION:  Full time (40 hours per week)

REPORTS TO: Head, Library Systems, University Libraries

RESPONSIBILITIES

The University at Albany Libraries seek a service-oriented, creative, collaborative, and energetic individual to be a member of the Library Systems team.  This position will assist in the administration of library and university enterprise systems and databases; perform activities related to the analysis, design, coding, testing, implementation, and maintenance of library's applications and databases; participate in the development and maintenance of library's websites and digitization projects; perform, monitor, and troubleshoot database maintenance, record import/export/manipulation, data mining /  analysis, and report generation; prepare documentation of application systems and local software development; perform routine system administration tasks and other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum qualifications:
* Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Science, Management Information Systems, or related field or the equivalent combination of education and experience;
* The degree must be from a college or university accredited by a U. S. Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization;
* Minimum one year programming experience with large-scale administrative systems using relational databases;
* Extensive working knowledge of at least one of the following scripting languages: CGI/Perl, PHP, JavaScript, or VBScript;
* Solid understanding of the systems development life cycle;
* Strong relational database design, management, and maintenance skills;
* Capability in creating and producing reports using SQL language;
* Hands-on experience in Linux, Unix, or Windows 2003 server platform, its related software applications, and basic system administration utilities;
* Familiarity with various database utilities and performance tools, including report generators, online analytical processing tools, and data-mining software;
* Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem solving skills;
* Strong oral/written communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with a diverse  group of clients and staff of all levels of computer knowledge;
* Ability to prioritize tasks; to work both independently and as part of a team;

Preferred qualifications:
* Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited library / information science program;
* Oracle, MSSQL, or MySQL experience and management skills;
* Knowledge and experience with a large-scale library system, e.g. Ex Libris ALEPH system;
* Experience with SQL-based library applications, including ILLiad;
* Basic understanding of networking technologies and web-based services in a client/server environment;
* knowledge of XML, XHTML, XLST, and metadata standards;
* Knowledge of or experience with digital library technologies, crosswalk applications and information exchange protocols, such as Z39.50, OAI-PMH, SRU/W, and OpenURL (Z39.88);
* Evidence-based assessment and statistical skills in Web log analysis;
* Familiar with Web 2.0 social networking technologies.
