Greetings to all. I recently discovered your site and have been enjoying
reading many of the postings, and wish I had such resources when I was in
grad school. As this is my first post, I wish it could be a contribution,
such as a bit of dialogue about the Vector Space Model or MOD-OAI, or some
such, but alas, today I wear a slightly different hat of Project Manager.
I would like to announce a job opportunity in Washington DC, with my
company CACI, providing contract support to the Library of Congress (OSI)
in its digital preservation initiatives. I hope that this posting keeps
in the spirit of this discussion group, as I simply wish to provide a
unique outlet for a talented person seeking to make his or her
contribution to the field of Digital Libraries. Here goes:
--------------------------------------------------------

Lucene Search Consultant (Washington, DC)

CACI-ISS has an immediate, full-time onsite opportunity for a
developer/architect well versed in search and discovery to assist the
Library of Congress in their ongoing digital initiatives.

Ideal candidates are familiar with a variety of concepts, practices, and
procedures, and will rely on extensive experience and judgment to plan and
accomplish goals. Expect a wide degree of creative license and latitude.

The ideal candidate will have solid, practical experience with Lucene and
be able to understand and optimize how to improve the existing
relationships between the retrieval and repository layers of the
application.

Duties:
Develop a layer in our repository architecture to efficiently locate and
retrieve content from different content repositories.

Develop index and access methods for efficient search and retrieval of
textual and non-textual content from different repositories.

Develop interfaces between the retrieval layer and underlying repository
architecture.

Develop semantic models for efficient location and retrieval of digital
content from different repositories.

Skills:
Degree Bachelor's or higher in Computer Science or related field.

A degree in Library Sciences, Information Sciences or Decision Sciences
with strong experience in software engineering would be considered.

Working experience (tuning, interfacing, development) with commercial and
open source search engines using large and heterogeneous datasets.
Significant experience working with Lucene is a must.

Experience in implementation of index and access methods for databases and
for other content-based systems.

Working knowledge of semantic aspects of search and retrieval.

Knowledge of data mining and knowledge discovery is a plus.
